Outdoor Kitchen - Manhattan NYC Rooftop

When you think of landscape construction, you normally associate it with earth and dirt. You envision the ground as the foundation for the project and you build up and out from there. But what happens when a homeowner wants an outdoor living space on a rooftop six stories above one of the busiest cities in the world? Kelly Homan, senior designer for Manhattan, New York-based KokoBo Greenscapes was asked to do just that when her client wanted a vacant Manhattan roof top turned into a space where they could relax and entertain in year round. Homan worked with the homeowner to add another design objective: to create a safe “greener” space, where the clients could feel a separation from the fast and noisy surrounding city. The project took 18 months from initial design consultation to completion. “Our main goal was to transform 1,000 square feet of gray, barren and cold roofscape into something that was green, lush and warm, and included the views of Manhattan’s spectacular skyline,” Homan says. Within that amount of space, she had to include a fully functional outdoor kitchen with a grill, refrigeration and weather-tight cabinetry from Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, three pergolas, a water feature, a green wall, seating and garden areas.
