She created the architectural design for our third floor kitchen and our downstairs duplex renovations, coming up with a series of design ideas that were both beautiful and within our budget. She helped select our contractor and collaborated with him during each stage of both projects. She made weekly visits to the job site, and just as importantly, the contractor would call Maria with questions as the work progressed thereby avoiding costly “do overs.” She completed both projects within our budget and even more surprisingly, on time! “Gail is a very talented architect, a pleasure to work with, and has unusual creativity. We began design of a new home with Gail Hallock, Inc. in April, 2011 after working with a number of other architects for about a year on preliminary designs. It was important to us that the architect understood the project holistically. Most seemed to concentrate on the exterior and not the livability & flow of the interior - requirements important to us. Gail deftly sketched throughout our conversations making sure we were on the same page. She was adept at picking up our 'style'. She does not produce cookie-cutter homes. During construction Gail handled problems adroitly and turned many into an opportunity to take something and make it even better. The creativity that Gail demonstrated with our home amazes me even today, a year after taking up residence. There's not a day that goes by that I don't look at some detail Gail created and think how beautiful it is and how lucky I am to live here. Gail is also one of the kindest people I have come across, plays well with others and was a strong and demonstrative advocate making sure that our home was built exactly as specified and with the correct materials throughout the project. We feel very fortunate to have found her. She does wear some fairly silly hats.”

“Over 30 years ago, early in his career, Sam Sherman worked on the design of the Chilmark home of our best friends. Our friends introduced us to the Vineyard, and were always very happy with the efficiency of their home and the excellent use of light. When we were able to purchase our own home on the island, Sam was our first choice as a designer, given the positive experience our friends had over the years. We purchased a dark, dingy home and did a near tear down of the existing structure. Sam saw what we did not see, that by reorienting the house we came away with incredible light and views. The design plan he provided not only gave us incredible views but the detail enabled the Contractor to bid the job to the penny. We needed a variance from the town to execute the plan and did not want to buy the house until we knew we could make the changes. Sam’s team dealt with the Edgartown planning board very effectively and efficiently to get the job approved in only 4 weeks. Because we are not full time residents of the island, we also had Sam run the contractor selection process and provide construction oversight. We have built a number of homes before but never have we been on budget and on schedule and never before have we been as pleased with the end result.
