“My dining room was a boring sea of drywall. BORING! So I added wood trim onto the walls which created 3 6'x2' vertical panels into which I laid wallpaper to bring interest to the walls. Trim panels good...wallpaper not so much. Then I had a crazy idea to remove the wallpaper and have someone paint the interior area of the panels instead. But what to paint in the panels? I had the curtains from my Mom and Dad's living room...replicated fabric of a blue and white 18th century batik pattern...and I decided to make pillows with the fabric and have Lou Marshal paint that design in the panels. I knew she would be the right person for the job because it would take a very keen eye to sort out how to make the panel background work well with the neutral color of my dining room walls...it couldn't be flat...it had to be a very subtle melange of values. I wanted it to resemble old plaster. I begged her to take the job even though she was swamped. Kindly she acquiesced. She studied the fabric for about 5 minutes; gave me some good ideas on how to revise the pattern to be most effective on the wall; gathered-up painting materials; came back, and went to work. In four days I had these stunning hand-painted wall panels that made the room look like something directly out of the 18th century. (Personally, I think Henry Francis duPont would have loved them. If he were alive today, he'd hire Lou for Winterthur work.) The background she created was an amazing blend of values that perfectly achieved that 'old plaster' look. And the detail on the flowers and vines make it seem as though you're looking out long windows onto a fantasy garden in Jaipur. Consistently, the adjective used by visitors to my home upon seeing the panels is "GORGEOUS." Lou Marshal is nothing short of genius with design aesthetic, color, and detail. Hire her if you can!”
