Kitchen Design Dilemna

I have a 1980's galley-style kitchen that I want to remodel. I need more countertop space and I don't have enough storage. Any suggestions?

Diane, I believe that your counterspace could be increased substantially by (partially) removing the half wall and the raised counter, and creating a 1' overhang on the other side of the modified half wall. which would allow the counter in that area to be as deep as 40" when not serving others--the eating bar portion may need to be sloped to the opening for the adjacent room. There are some other nice ideas, like removing the soffit above the cabs although that is largely cosmetic, unless you like dust bunnies, are taller than I so you can dust easily, or want additional storage and can afford it.

If you can live with the rest of the kitchen functionally, this would be as simple as rebuilding the counter in one area, and replacing the counter surface in the adjacent areas. If the area allows, you could also extend the counter overhang 12" in the direction of the table, which would give you one additional placesetting, if not too crowded. Allow yourself 4' min. btw. the extended counter and the table edge--tight but workable. Happy Houzzing.

What is your idea? Can you expand into the eating area, is this your only eating area ?

Oh wow! I don't know what your budget is but I would gut that whole thing. First thing I'd do is get rid of the soffits and the "dangling" cabinets. It will make the whole area look bigger. Maybe make a big island that goes into the eating are and get rid of the table. Definitely try to enclose the fridge with some cabinetry so it's not just hanging out there. can you expand into the seating area? Maybe make a bigger island into that area if you want to keep the table/chairs

Hi Few points: 1. It's not an independent residential apartment. It is a flat in a 25storey block 2. I have attached the floor plan for reference. The entrance is not too huge. 3. It's good to know that you guys have liked the Bathroom & kitchen design. The tiling work is in progress and it has come out well. I will take few snaps and post 4. When I say resort look - I understand and mean a simplistic natural looking design. More towards wood, nature, green, matt finish etc... Hope i am not confusing anyone here 5. Do you think the bathroom & kitchen design gels with what I mean by resort look. 6. The foyer area is a small (not too big) entrance. It's like a passage as you can see in the pics I posted earlier. When you enter you don't see the entire living room rather you see the wall (kitchen wall), where we intend to keep our dining table. Some thoughts on designing that wall is also requested Thanks!

It would be good to know if you want to do a complete remodel (move walls and replace everything) or leave the basic footprint and cabinets. What is on the other side of the end wall? Pics and sketches of floor plans of the adjoining areas, windows, doors, etc. would be very helpful.

Using the same layout you can double the island and add storage to the dining room side. I would add a nice double door pantry 48" up to the ceiling.
