Help me pick colours/theme for my living rooms!?

Hi, we recently purchased a house and I'm struggling to design our combined living/dining room. It is next to the kitchen and on the other side is family/tv room so you walk through the middle to get to kitchen or tv room. I'm unsure what colour to paint the walls? I was thinking a soft Gray or light taupe? Will that make it too dark? Or should I leave it white? Wallpaper? I'd like a little sitting room with two small chairs and a small side table so as not to interrupt the flow. A rug undernearth? Not sure of style but I am drawn to modern/contemporary. I have kids and although im drawn to white colours, I'm not sure it's a good idea! Dining table I like the idea of white as it will contrast nicely against the parquetry floors.

I'd really like your advice on colours/styles/themes. If you click on my username/idea book you'll see the kind of style I like.

1st pic is the empty space where sitting area would be. There's a door leading outside to the right and a hallway to bedrooms on left.
2nd pic is the same living/dining space furnished, outlook from kitchen. 3rd pic is kitchen view, 4th pic is area furnished, perspective from sitting area. Note: furniture is previous owners. We will be buying new to suit!

Any advice welcomed! :)

I think either a soft gray or a light taupe might work here as a paint color as would the white. I think that a wallpaper behind the two chairs and the table would help define the area - since it's narrow, a rug might be more difficult. I looked at a bit of your ideabook and I would go through that and look for commonalities. Some ideas - if you keep the white walls, perhaps go with taupe or gray chairs or a taupe or gray wall with white chairs, would look for possible options for slipcovers with the white. Other possibilities for a dining table would be a glass table with perhaps a modern lacquer finish sideboard and some great art on that wall over the sideboard.

Well, the previous owners had a nice arrangement. In the living area, I would put a sofa as they did, but also add two comfortable chairs facing the sofa for a conversation area. Or do a seating of four upholsterd chairs arounf a coffee table.

You can add color to the room without making dark. There are two greys that I like:

Although your floors are gorgeous, I thing a small area rug will define the sitting area. You can add more color throught the rug.

You get more floor space if you have you buffet where the opening to the kitchen is. The table can them move closer to the wall.

Hi Few points: 1. It's not an independent residential apartment. It is a flat in a 25storey block 2. I have attached the floor plan for reference. The entrance is not too huge. 3. It's good to know that you guys have liked the Bathroom & kitchen design. The tiling work is in progress and it has come out well. I will take few snaps and post 4. When I say resort look - I understand and mean a simplistic natural looking design. More towards wood, nature, green, matt finish etc... Hope i am not confusing anyone here 5. Do you think the bathroom & kitchen design gels with what I mean by resort look. 6. The foyer area is a small (not too big) entrance. It's like a passage as you can see in the pics I posted earlier. When you enter you don't see the entire living room rather you see the wall (kitchen wall), where we intend to keep our dining table. Some thoughts on designing that wall is also requested Thanks!

Hi Rubypumps. Unfortunately you have made the common mistake of mixing undertones. I see this a lot as a colour consultant. Mistakes with your hard finishes are the worst kind because they are very costly to change. Right now your walls have a pink undertone and your walls behind the tub and counter are clearly blue grey. Since blue is complementary to pink, it brings out the pink in the tile even more and the clean blue makes the tile look dirty. It may be hard for you to see this, but this is what's happening and this is probably why you don't like your bathroom. Since you chose such a busy mosaic, it has become the boss (and focal point) of the room and I would now keep your other finishes as simple as possible. If you can, down the road, change the beige tile. Because unfortunately, there is no magic colour combination that will make it disappear. Working with what you have, I would most likely go with a more neutral cabinet like Uniboard G21 Viva Walnut. It will help warm up the space. Black is too stark for this bathroom.

Without pix of the room and headboard you aren't going to get much help. Generally, bedding is purchased first and paint is color cued to their color. Comment here and use the Attach Images botton to add jpg pix.

You already have your accent colour as your sofa pillows (log roll pillows). I would take one of them shopping with me to get a rug that has that colour in it. It doesn't need to be a lot of that colour (I love the idea of burgandy rug here...but it might be too much with your monotone scheme). You can find a large rug that incorporates that red/raspberry in it so that you have a colour that is now your accent.

Thank you all for the comments! I really like those paint colours. I think I'm leaning toward paint or wallpaper. It's white now and just looks really stark. I also like these chairs in the attached images. First one I love as is but they are nearly $3k each so I'll have to find something cheaper. The second pic I love the armchairs and colour scheme too so thinking this could work? Third pic i love the colour and style od chair agains other colours and textures, fourth pic i love the colours. How should I start? Choose furniture or paint or something else first?

I would go for any definite colors and furniture that you want first and then follow with paint colors. For instance in the second picture you have art that would be a base for colors you would want to match the furnishings and paint colors to. In the third picture, you have a very definite color on the chair that you would want to match the paint color to. In the third picture, you also have a very defined form to the chair that if you have wallpaper behind it, you would want to have work with it. I would start with what you want to use the room for and what furniture would work in the space - pay attention to size and scale per measurements, etc.. and where it would be placed. Then, what do you want the room to feel like and what style and furnishings and colors would express that. You want it to be cohesive, and want the pieces to work together in the space. Really like your examples - have fun!
