Need help deciding on cabinet finish.....

Designing new build kitchen.... All I know now is that I like dark walnut floors and I have red Persian runners for the kitchen. Opposite side of kitchen is full windows, so no problem with light, but can't decide whether to go with brown stained, marshmellow white, or painted tan cabinets. I like an eclectic look and mixing the wood (will have a large island), but I'm not talented enough to pull it off without some advice. I have kids and a keeping room... Want an instant "homey" feel. Any advice ?

It's a Frank Betz plan... Shakes and stone exterior; European cottage style. Interior stone fireplace, dark hardwood floors, and cream/brown brick veneer back splash. Keeping room will have vaulted ceiling and stained beams. Layout of the kitchen will be a bit larger but similar to the one shown in

No windows between cabinets; sink in island. Will not have beams over island though...... White ceiling. Need help desperately. Want to do something different and warm, but not dark.

Are you saying that cooking next to the chute would gross you out even if its covered? Andd to use it for its intended purpose? In the first picture, it looks like the stove is directly underneath the chute, but I can see in other pics that it is not. I think it is far enough away. If everything is bagged properly, it shouldn't be that bad. You will have to check on local code regarding having the stove next to the window. Code may make your decision for you. People usually just put shorter cabinets above that type of range hood. I would recommend doing so because you need all the storage you can get. The hood--being different from the bank of cabinets--will provide relief to the eye. With cabinets above, it'll still feel balanced. And, as for covering the chute, do you want to cover it and restrict access or do you still need to use it for its intended purpose and just want to camouflage it? To help the room feel pleasant, cheery, and light, I recommend using a glass tile. Even though it's applied to a wall, the translucency still shows and evokes a sense of the adjectives above. I think it would help keep things light. Consider a slightly higher toe-kick underneath the lower cabinets. It helps to create a lighter-footed feeling. You could also consider cabinets that have furniture style feet. for a more open feeling. Your kitchen seems like an ideal room to use modern, lacquered cabinets. I don't know if you like the super-modern look, but I think it could be nice. Maybe just for the uppers. Use a medium-to-light toned wood on the bottom. A limestone floor might be nice. Or you can do wood or laminate. You could go with dark or light. I think it's mostly about preference.

Hello there :) Nice design by the way. Perhaps you can: 1. Change the door panels only. Keep the existing shape & the cupboards, the carpenter can 'update' the doors with different handles too (like image above). 2. Spray paint is more $$$ but I think it is longer lasting. 3. Laminated is less $$ but as we all know it chips & eventually the laminate comes out (wear & tear). 4. Unless you want the inside of the cabinet to be changed from existing white to a different colour, then the carpenter have to dismantle everything & redo. Hi Alice, that's a really good question - challenging dilemma with a strong limitation (no hacking!) but I believe workable. Would you consider making changes to the backsplash? Adding some strip lighting will help too. Given the pink checkered floor tiles cannot be changed, I'd favour going for very neutral and clean looking cabinetry - to reduce visual clutter and bring in some harmony. Regardless of colour of finish choice, I prefer cabinetry that's not see-through. How about natural wood finishes: All-white with wood countertops might work as well: I leave it to the professionals to give their advice!

You seem drawn to the painted cabinets, based on the photos you've chosen. I would suggest going with a toned down paint color (not bright white/off white)... a more muted, warm paint color for the cabinetry. Then bring in a rich looking stained wood island and a nice warm color/texture in the backsplash. A creative wall finish or wallpaper with a simple pattern or with tone on tone colors can tie all the colors together and add more warmth and style.

This island is a great tone; not too dark but works well with the dark floor, and very warm, rich and timeless.

Kitchens are my forte. The exact color should be selected based on your home, style and other colors/items in the home. The hood will be a focal point in the room, based on what you've said, so I would consider doing an interesting material (like copper or metal) or some kind of "showstopper" piece. But it should be coordinated finish wise with both lighting and cabinet hardware. How soon are you completing the project? Is it already being built? I agree with Brandstrom Interiors, The color on the back wall should be a light color by what you are describing. The island in a darker stain but do not match the floors. The vent hood in a metal would make it pop but matching the island is a good choice also. I would take them up on their offer to help. It really could be money well spent. I know I have saved people from making mistakes that would have cost them more when being built. Good luck and have fun.
