Help re-designing layout for one large all-inclusive great room

Hello! I am a newbie to houzz and I need help!! :( I have a ranch house with a super duper large great room. The only real division is the peninsula for the kitchen. Other than that, we have an eating area, living area, and what we assumed should be a "formal" dining area.

I am planning on buying a larger nicer table for the "eating" area off the kitchen because we hardly if ever use the formal dining for its intended purpose. In any case, I have got myself wondering if it would look so odd if we re-purposed the formal dining section of this large room to something like a sitting area (with a couple chairs and a cozy couch?). I was hoping you all could look at my current layout in pics and tell me what you think? Or if you have other ideas?? Thanks!! :)

Oh, mind the playpen mess :) I have a 2 yr old!

Hi Melissa,

Welcome to Houzz! You can definitely use your formal dining room space for an additional seating area. I suggest changing the chandelier to something that is more for a living space, or put it on a swag hook and pull it over to the sitting area. I am available if you have any questions. Yes, I think a little sitting are would look nice. You could make it look seperate with an area rug, maybe. I normally don't love rugs on top of carpet, but it can help in certain cases. You could put a little chair for reading and have a lamp there, and a little bookcase if you have one...I think there's a few things you could do!

Thanks for your comments, its great to discuss with houzers! You are so right @decoenthusiaste the view is beautiful and one reason why I chose the apartment. the room is longer than it is wide, and I wanted the kitchen/bar to be included in the seating so the attached pic is how I was planning to lay it out. @cdrdesign I can't/change the table, its a gorgeous mahogany piece I had custom made and one I see keeping for some years yet! I dont plan a TV in this room, will put it in another room. This room in for living and entertaining guests. Sorry I dont have layout software, so you will have to make do with my scribbles using powerpoint! Could really do with help on choosing the light fitting in place of the central fan- what would look nice here or should I wait till the furniture gets here to choose the light to match?

I agree with the others - ask your neighbor about painting the side of the garage that faces your yard. Depending on your style of decor, you can treat this as a part of your yard and change the appearance completely. Consider a low fence to separate your yard from the street/driveway, something similar to the red fence shown, to provide you a smaller "room" for entertaining. I live in an area where the side of the neighbors house defines the property line and have decorated the side of the neighbors house with various items to break up the expanse of wall (old window frames with the glass missing, sections of old iron fences, bird houses, etc); it really helps to cozy up the space. A trench filled with gravel and topped with larger rocks will help with the water issue and direct the water to other areas of the yard. A brick or paver patio would be lovely for establishing a conversation/grill area. The pictures submitted by PC have some great ideas. I can't recommend plants since I have not idea what part of the country you are located in

My walk-in is slightly longer (1.60x3.60m) - I only have the design with measurements on paper, but I could look for it this evening, scan it and post it for you if you want. In the meanwhile, have a look at the photos of the finished room. We took advantage of the height and got pull down rails; also, a big shelf above the door and narrow shelves on the side. yes please loose the second dining area, when the house was built it was grand to have all these extra living and dining rooms, but its just not so for today's family. I would even see about taking out that little wall one day, and treating it like an entry seating area. and for now it would make a great kids play space and storage area some low bookcases, storage bins a rug and two chairs, it can grow up into a reading space.

also consider pulling you couch back a ways, and using up some space, adding a console table behind to define rooms.

dont by a new dining set paint the one you have!
