Kitchen needs color

I love my kitchen but it desperately need some oooomph. My home is mostly gray-blue & rusty red which I would like to continue into the kitchen but how? Bottom photos are of the family room that connects so I would like it to be cohesive. Thanks in advance!

Beautiful kitchen!

I'd remove the rug under the kitchen table altogether. It's right by the door and under the table ...2 "dirty" areas and it tends to chop the space. Instead, I'dd add a lovely print to the drapes that are hanging on either side of the door.You could also add tie on cushions to the chairs and bar stools. Pier 1 usually has a good selection I like some of the original art that's featured above...especially the one with the coral colours. The family room feels heavy to me. i'd also do something with the 2 paintings behind the sofa. the way they are positioned, makes the existing chest feel small. If you are keeping it, I'd hang the pictures one on top of the other.

A large canvas could go on the large wall. If original art is not in the budget, you can always canvas transfer a poster so that it feels like original art. Many poster companies use a print on demand program where they can also re size and sometimes re colour the print to your specs.

I'd also replace the existing sofa cushions with what I call "karate cushions". they are soft filled and you chop them down. Since you have a leather sofa, I'd go large...22" x 22"- They tend to look more inviting and don't slide down on leather as much.

I 'd add an area rug to the family room, pull the chair in closer to the sofa and replace the stiff looking trees with one near the window that has more movement, like a Dracina palm.

Adding stone or wood around the TV would greatly enhance it and add charm and warmth, but keep it light.

The colorless prints hanging over the sofa could be swapped out for something with color. It would add a lot to your room. Then, pick up the colors in the art and carry those colors in accessories into the kitchen counters and table. Lovely kitchen! The space would be greatly enhanced with color. You could change the rug on the floor with one with some of the colors in the other room, the rusty red. The color red warm things up nicely. On the table, you could put a large bowl in either glass or ceramic which would add more color to the room. Adding some art to the wall(s) in the kitchen (which we cannot see) would warm up the space some more and give you the ooomph you desire.

I've done a few similar units and created an island. The wc area has too many utilities (waste pipes etc) to be fully removed, plus living in a Maisonette myself, I find it practical to keep a powder room downstairs. You could push the wall between the front door (if you are able to purchase the access area, you can move the front door out as well for even more foyer space). In its place could be full height cabinets as well as your fridge. At the back wall you could plan your basin and hob on the island (or the other way around). My preference is to place a glass wall and door to the yard, so you have the washing machine away from the kitchen and another layer between the kitchen and the powder room. The chute is contained then as well, which works pretty ok. Your laundry will be out of sight if the glass is frosted, but still provides plenty of light. Well, open or close depend on your lifestyle. Do you like entertaining guests or whole family gathering around while you are cooking? If yes do an open kitchen with island. Bringing kichen, dining, living space together into one big room will make your home feel much bigger, airier,lighter. Or do you worry about privacy and the heat, smell? Hi, I am currently renovating my kitchen. Pictures of my tiles are below. I love wood grain cabinets. However, i am at odds as to whether I should get wood grained or solid coloured laminates. My designer told me that I can only choose from Arova n Jennings brand. He does offer EDL as well. But I do not like the solid colours from any of these laminate companies. A solid black colour will leave finger print marks easily. And I think grey is going to make my kitchen look monochromatic which I feel might get boring overtime. Some advice is really needed.

You're passing up two very obvious places for color with the rug under your dining table and the runner on top. That could be a good place to bridge the two rooms.

I'm honestly not seeing much blue or red in your family room. Brown floors, brown curtains, brown furniture. Pick an accent color and get serious about it -- bring the rust or a blue (or green!) into the curtains, the dining rug (can't really see living room rug, runner, stool seats, some bowls or other accents in the kitchen. You don't seem to have much wall space in the kitchen for art (although maybe the wall we're not seeing?), so these other things are the ways to get the job done. Also, you may want to bring some lighter elements into your living space to tie in the other direction...

An easy way to add some warmth is to add bowls of lemons + limes or flowers on the island, kitchen table and side table. Here is a link to our CONTAINERS

It looks to me like you need accent pieces! Change out your rug, runner and curtains to something more cheerful and fun. Add pops of color wit dinnerware or le creuset cookware and accessories. Match to you mixer and bring in more pops of the rust color. Add some matching mini topiary/greenery to the kitchen (or maybe a spice wreath.) There are tons of options! You're working with a very neutral canvas; it's easy to go from there!

Go back to your color chip cards for the blue gray and dusty red. Use the darkest shade on one of them to paint your island.
