Dark living room

What can I do to improve the lighting in this living area? (Note: skylights not an option). Very limited budget. Are there any floor lamps that are especially good for brightening an area?

I'm no lighting expert, but I can tell you that your lamp in the corner is far too low to be helpful in lighting the area. The lower, the smaller the pool of light.

A really light rug would help, too.

Thank you! This isn't our furniture yet. We have the house under contract and one of my few complaints is that it feels too dark. Our furniture is light grey and we have a cream area rug and cream ottoman so hopefully the lighter furniture will help also!

Hi Kharan, Haiku and Big Ass Fans come to mind when I read 'modern ceiling fans'. Hope that helps! As for the door that you're looking at, I believe that would be a custom-built one as it's designed to match the house's overall look, and it's not a standard size. Best to talk to your architect or interior designer, as Sugarbakers suggested.

have the sofa and dining table in the center. Dining table against the back of the sofa either the longer or shorter side. Can shift table to accomodate more people. Extendable table prefered. Push the table and sofa nearer to window to have more walking space. You can have a storage / shoe cabinet against the bomb shelter wall.

Remove the blinds and add shear curtains, if you need the privacy. Or keep the blinds under the curtains if you need to block light from the TV. Some up lighting would also help. And if the ceiling fan isn't a complete requirement, a ceiling light fixture that puts out more light would help a lot.

For daytime, blinds up, curtains open, let the light flow. A whacking big mirror placed right opposite the window could do good things too.

By the way, my living room is very dark, thanks to overhangs and trees I'm not about to cut down. And I can't put a whacking big mirror opposite the window that lets in such light at there is. Sigh.

Yeah I think it's the covered patio directly outside the windows that limits the light from coming in. A blessing (in the Florida summers) and a curse!

This is our current furniture that we will move into this place (don't mind the toy bin!) ;)

An arc light in the corner behind the sectional will put light in the center of the room, get rid of the fan with light they are horrible sources of light some good table lamps at each end of the sofa and I would replace the fan with a simple ribbon type track light if you still need more lighting after that.

Tall floor lamps that have a glass shade upward facing (like a bowl) work best and almost as well as a window for adding light to a dark space. Many styles and prices ranging from less than $100 are shown on shop Houzz. Tri lights give you flexibility, often units have a secondary arm with task lighting. If you find you need the fan, then replace the fixture with a multi light version on a dimmer switch. Table lamps can still be used since layered lighting is a very effective way to create a cozy atmosphere in any room.
