Reupholstering chairs for contemporary home

Hi, We're renovating our house and it's early in the game, but I've just purhcased two chairs and am in the process of selecting fabric to refurbish them. Since I'm not closed to colours, I'm a bit confused about what fabric to choose. I love the urban contemporary look, love exposed brick, warm feeling, a lounge where you just want to hang.

These two chairs are a la 50's wooden arm, cushioned seats.

Any ideas on fabric choices that could keep my options. Reupholstering is pricey and I just didn't want to go my usual safe plain jane route, but also recognise I need to keep my options open for future (as yet undecided) possibilities.

Hi Patricia, these are the chairs above. The look I like the most is the second last photo below, but not big on maroon as have so many maroon rugs and its dominated over the years. I was trying to go for a mustard, as per the samples, but thinking it too might dictate too much. I don't know...go a plain grey, or a pattern with nice cream and green? Sorry what's a sneaker?

I also have an overwhelming need to see something curvy, flirtatious and round in the space. Consider this when scouting for decor and accesory items (i.e. round rug, curvy fluid light fixtures). Also, would it be a complete abomination to sand down the furniture (so it looks older) or painting it a new color before upholstering to modernize it? I agree with j222b's suggestion in that the furniture and space could benefit from some eclectic coverings but perhaps a neutral fabric against a new color that could bring out the carving of the wood could work too? In my head I see a rusty orange or deep aubergine purple or rich dark green. Just a thought...

Talk to a professional. I think there are building codes for steps. A 4" step might be too short and cause people to lose balance & trip. Can you install a longer window? A longer window with seats to enjoy the view? Binoculars on a tripod to encourage viewing or stargazing with comfy chairs, too?

HI -- Great windows !! Full white drapes right across the whole window wall , full length ceiling to floor and wall to wall . Long low 3 or 4 seat sofa or square sectional in white (leather or fabric ?) and a swivel chair or two in black (leather or fabric ?) Have the sofa and chair-s in either material just not both the same . A long reclaimed /distressed wood dining room table -- you need the wood for a bit of warmth in the room. Modern white and chrome chairs and maybe two funky statement chairs for each end of the table.Too cold and flat looking to have total black and white. An area rug for living room area -no rug under dining room table. The area rug could be one with a salt and pepper texture or a chevron pattern or similar . Then silver accents as in side table bases with glass tops and lamps . Then some big colorful modern art.

Now onto buying furniture. Am going to buy the following, 1. Living Room a. Sofa (to seat 4) b. Dining table 2. Chairs for the Study Area 3. Beds and cupboards for the kids room Any color recommendations for Living room sofa and dining table would be much appreciated :) Regards, Venka Vimar

I think before deciding this you should deal with waht you want for sofas , rug then decide the chair cover .

Thanks, Patricia. I know I am doing it all the wrong way around. Not in my permanent home and therefore don't have the space for sofa yet.

Why not try printed fabric such as zebra stripes or high rise city view. Make it an accent piece to yr room.
