What kind of flooring

Just bought a new house and need to do new flooring. Laminate, hardwood, engineered? Tile in kitchen or stick with one of the above?
We have had all the floors in previous houses and I feel there is pros and cons to both. Laminate has come along ways in past year!

Don't forget luxury vinyl planks or tile. They are a cool option to consider.

Porcelain tile is very popular and I understand it lasts a long time and comes in many colors!

I have stained concrete floors and not only do I love them... but 95% of everyone that walks in the door goes goo goo over them... Well, there was that one guest that waited a half hour before asking "So, when you do you think you'll be able to afford carpet?" .... So, this isn't a great pic, but you can see that we mixed black in and that there's a greenish border... Looking back, I would have done a different color had I given it more thought because it's a lot of work to change stained concrete... but painted concrete can be painted over and over... By the way...The lower level of my house is 1500 sq ft and I vacuum those concrete floors, all of them, in less than 15 minutes... I was 2 x's a year and including stripping the old wax, it only takes me about three hours! This shine when it's done is SO worth the 3 hours ...

Marble are non-porous thus it would cause etching and corrosion. Besides that, marble are high maintenance materials. Marble requires proper care and maintenance. Acid should never be used on marble as it shall loose its shine. Marble should be regularly polished over a period of time to give it a new look. If proper precautions are not taken the marble becomes yellowish in colour. Italian marble is usually very soft and prone to cracks. Proper resins have to be used to make the surface strong and solid and avoid further cracks. Proper sealants should be used in marble flooring as the marble is highly porous and prone to staining. It absorbs stains very quickly especially kitchen stains hence are not appropriate for kitchen counter tops. Quartz would be a better choice as quartz are non porous. Well fellow Houzzers I hate to admit it but I've been firmly planted on Houzz for a large part of the day under the watchful eye of Foxtel tunes "Blues & roots". Most of it was okay including some Bob Dylan and Van Morrison as stand outs. My 25 year old son is home and said "How are your going with your project?" I said okay/good/great etc...(secret women's business) but my neck is getting sore. Then he said "you should listen to some music on your headphones" and he suggested tycho. Well after getting in the zone for the last hour...with this techno trance'ish background music (okay'ish music I guess, no singing just some dj spinning airy electronic sounds and stuff)... An hour or so has gone by thanks to the never ending ability of Youtube to load the next album etc while I have been mindfully saving and reading lots of Houzz including raiding photos from Luke Buckle's idea books. (Thanks Luke!) The outside world has been buzzing along without distracting me, I am lost in the world of Houzz & might be here for days unless I am rescued by someone offering food and water. Now to get to the bottom of this rant, tycho & similar types of music is apparently what young people listen to when they are on their computers working on something important that we parents will never understand. (My son is working on an app apparently) As they have headphones on we have to physically interrupt them for the likes of dinner, bin emptying, cleaning etc and this is why there is a generation gap caused by people like me not getting with the times. All I want to do is go to a spa for neck therapy!

I would go with wood or wood look. tile is hard and cold on legs and feet in a kitchen with whee you tend to stand prepping a lot.

The area where you live (cold, hot or temperate climate) will dictate the most appropriate floors. Of course, if you like a particular material, you can always "make it" appropriate.

The amount of use in a home as well as the amount of moisture in an area will all dictate which material will be longer wearing. Be aware that laminates do NOT like kitchens (someone has already complained that their Pergo has bubbled and pealed in the presence of moisture). They can have a hard time at entrance ways as well.

One of the ways around this = tile in kitchen/bath/entrance (go ahead and use the same tiles in all areas = a sense of flow). You could then use laminate in all other areas. The thing you want to remember about laminate is: thicker is better. A "nice" laminate is 12mm - 15mm thick and will start at $3.50/sf - $7/sf.

Remember to work with a HIGH END, DENSE underlay. The complaints about laminate clicking and bounce comes from 2 places:

1) uneven subfloor

2) "bad underlay" that is "too squishy"

Take time to work the subfloor (and the money) and then work with a dense underlay like solid cork (6mm cork underlay = wonderful feeling laminate).
