Glass panels -design mistake?

We thought it would be a good idea to put glass panels in a new stud wall to bring light through into the hall, the house is 1960's so quite bland with no 'features' so I wanted something bright and funky, now I need to choose the coloured glass I think it might look dated and awful, any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Hi there, are you looking at leaded lights? Or plain coloured glass?

There won't be much in the way of plain coloured without it having a texture because most plain glass is too thin to toughen and you will need toughened glass in those sized openings.

There is etched glass which is a frosted type glass (not textured!) that lets light in but gives more privacy. We have it in our front door panels.

Alternatively there are leased lights. The most expensive option though but could be stunning. However you would want to avoid any standard patterns, flowers etc etc and go for something very contemporary either in a variety of clear textured glass, full colour or half and half. Pattern wise I'm thinking something multiple layers of colours that swirl from the one larger panel right through to the smaller panel as if it's one whole window.

Have a look on the web for some ideas but as I say, leaded lights are not very cheap and are extra expensive if you are in London/south of the country.

Thanks Tani, I was thinking something fairly plain, not traditional stained glass effect obviously (!) I do live in SE but not London, it seemed like a good idea at the time but now I realise we will have to have panels made to order so I can't really take them back if I don't like them unlike most of the things I buy from Dunelm!

I'm assuming since he's recommended 5 panels, they will all be stacking to one side? If you were to have each side stack, then an even number would make sense. If they are stacking to one side, then five is better, as it is an odd number (better visually) and one less panel to stack back. You might want to tell us more about where these doors are going and perhaps even send us some pictures. If we can see what you are addressing we would be able to give you an answer that goes beyond conjecture.

eermei, I've never seen a set of accordion doors that didn't have a bottom track. Could you post pictures of the ones you have seen so I can do some research and become more informed? I guess for an interior only door that it would be possible, but the bottom track is part of the security and weather tightness of an exterior door?

I have used Lumicor or 3Form resin panels for this application many times. The resin panels are translucent, letting light in but are still private. They are two panels with flat materials between them; like grass, rice paper, fabrics, metals, strings, bamboo, wood veneers, it is endless. Check both companies websites for different options of panels. Here are some examples. Another idea could be textured glass, like rain or water glass.

Hi, I agree with Gary, do a hotel setting to make it more appealing. Here’s an idea. Remove the partition, move the closet down and add a big slider freeing up the space for a spacious bedroom with lounge seating/dining by the window. Think about the tv wall where it can have a proper work desk space. And do you have balcony? Perfect !

I think you might be right about the coloured glass not standing the test of time. From what I can see in these images your house is fairly contemporary, so I would go for plain glass. This would be better from a resale point of view also.

Then if you do want to try some colour, you can get coloured glass window film, it's not that hard to fit and removes if you heat it up (with a hairdryer) and pull it off slowly. I have used purlfrost film before and it is possible for you to fit it yourself, they even do some fancy printed designs. Not sure if purfrost do a transparent coloured film, but other companies do.

Thanks, coloured film seems like a good idea, much easier to change if we don't like it, I had a quick look online and it comes in so many colours so we can go safe or adventurous.
