slide and fold doors

We are having 6 pieces of slide and fold doors in our living room. Our contractor insists the bottom track is needed in order for the doors to be stable when closed. Is that the case?

Yes, I believe your contractor is right. If you think about it, without the bottom track the doors are free to swing back and forth, and I doubt that's what you want.

Is the problem that you want smooth floors for the times when they are open? Can't the tracks be installed just below grade?

I have to say that well made Roman Shades are not cheap, they are the higher end of the market. Secondly the thing to consider is that they are an all or nothing product, they are either open or closed. What part of the country do you live in? What direction do the windows face, and how often are those doors used? Drapery that can not be moved completely out of the way will get caught in the doors all the time, so while I hate taking out a window for any reason, removing it might make sense as it seems rather redundant. Don't do any type of venetian if this door is used a lot, and if you do, make sure you do an outside mount, allowing for the stack to go above the frame of the doors when they are open. I suggest that you look into Hunter Douglas Polysatin Shutters, they are great on french doors, and the Hunter Douglas Duette Architella Vertiglide is perfect on doors, they also come as a duo light, meaning you can put two blinds into one product - so a sheer and an opaque or semi-opaque product. Just some thoughts to consider.

You can see from the pics below there are very small gaps, to allow the door to swing a bit, but if they are not custom doors the gaps can be larger. You can add a small piece of trim to make them less noticeable. But to me it sounds like the doors were hung incorrectly.

If privacy is the issue, get the sliders tinted to about 70%. You'll still get most of the natural light but will have privacy. Now, keep in mind this only works during the day. At night you are exposed. To address this, you may wish to do a floor to ceiling white sheer/linen curtains. The number of folds in the curtain will dictate the amount of visible silhouette at night. The track is below floor level, like a u channel that is used for shower glass panels. I guess I can't do anything about that. But i have seen sliding doors where there are no channels of any kind on the floor. They look a lot nicer, don't they?

I agree, they do. And they collect less dirt and dust, too.

eermei, I've never seen a set of accordion doors that didn't have a bottom track. Could you post pictures of the ones you have seen so I can do some research and become more informed? I guess for an interior only door that it would be possible, but the bottom track is part of the security and weather tightness of an exterior door?
