What can I do with this space under the staircase?

It is tiled with a sunken pond and plants and pebbles. The tiles have to stay. Any ideas?

Hi Michelle,

I will just presume that this is an interior staircase - of which there are multiple options to build out with shelving, wine racks, or conceal into hidden storage. Have a look through some of our previous jobs to get an idea of how we treat this void space. Best of luck!

I would seriously consider replacing the cabinets before putting a new granite countertop on them. The problem is that no one will remove the countertop at a later date if you want to change the cabinets, due to the possibility of breakage. The only choice you will have then is a reface. Adding new doors, drawer fronts, and veneered sides is just a facelift. You could also add new hardwood drawers with undermount cushion close slides, but by the time you do this if will be the same cost as new cabinets now. The cabinets you have now, frameless, particle board sides are notorious for having the hinge screws strip out the particle board they are attached to. Since you can't put a longer screw in them, because the material is only 3/4" of an inch thick you have a problem. You also can't put a wider screw in them because it won't fit through the pre-drilled holes in the hinges.

You should replace them with vertical pickets or glass, and as soon as possible. What you have now is completely unsafe for children. If any opening is bigger than 4" it's dangerous when they're crawling. Their body can fit through, but not their head, they can hang themselves. Plus the horizontal rails are far too easy to climb once they're walking, nothing you add to what's there can fix that. Sorry to be graphic, but it's important.

Hard to say just from your description. Might take a clever stair designer to come up with a better solution for you. Are you thinking for esthetics or function or both? Is this a remodel? Please give us some more info so we can help. Hi Rubypumps. Unfortunately you have made the common mistake of mixing undertones. I see this a lot as a colour consultant. Mistakes with your hard finishes are the worst kind because they are very costly to change. Right now your walls have a pink undertone and your walls behind the tub and counter are clearly blue grey. Since blue is complementary to pink, it brings out the pink in the tile even more and the clean blue makes the tile look dirty. It may be hard for you to see this, but this is what's happening and this is probably why you don't like your bathroom. Since you chose such a busy mosaic, it has become the boss (and focal point) of the room and I would now keep your other finishes as simple as possible. If you can, down the road, change the beige tile. Because unfortunately, there is no magic colour combination that will make it disappear. Working with what you have, I would most likely go with a more neutral cabinet like Uniboard G21 Viva Walnut. It will help warm up the space. Black is too stark for this bathroom.
