Would this home look good if the stucco were painted white? and maybe adding a wood shingles roof?

Yes on the white. Wood shingles not a good idea and those shutters really need to go.

HI -- Beautiful ranch with a bit of a French flair . The house would be better suited with a black slate looking roof . Paint the house in a French Vanilla White . If you keep with the shutters then you need a raised panel under the window . The shutters can be natural wood or stained blue or painted black . If you want to continue with the French look then search that style to see what else you can do . Adding some wrought iron accents might be nice . You could have an entrance court yard in the center section. Also think about adding some Architectural trim around the front door like side plinths and a pediment on top . Love all the trees .. just beautiful. You will have to spray paint the stucco and use paint for masonry .

So you just want to enclose the top area to make it a place to sleep? Does it need to have a kitchen and bathroom or just a sleeping area? I am not an architect but you might want to ask more direct questions like " How can I enclose this upper floor to make it livable?". It looks like you live in a very mild climate. Perhaps you should put up wood walls with windows that match the design on the balcony panels. I am not a builder so I hope someone else has some ideas for you.

Since you have white and black windows, fans, doors, gates, you need a light tan beige rather than an off white cream - off white will just look dirty next to the white. Something that goes warm neutral instead of yellow will work well. Tropical can mean lots of different things to different people - pick one accent color - a lagoon type green-blue-green with large leafy palms, and add a sail shade (triangle shaped) in the same tone to the upper deck.

White is not a practical color for the outside as it may turn green after a while. I would recommend taking the old-fashioned shutters down, adding sleek metal roof that is energy efficient.
I think stucco with EcoClad accent, modern entry would change this house into a more appealing home.

I think your home should "lean" into this style. Slate roof is typical of this style and there are companies that do steel replica slate that will end your roofing chores forever. Paint the body a slightly greyed white, not pure white. Eliminate the shutters. Looks like you have mix and match windows all around. If you can't replace your windows with French doors or windows at this time, maybe you can paint the window trim and the panel below the windows black. Wrought iron balconies would add a great deal of style, and you can actually add the French doors later. A for the big triple window in the center, I'd bite the bullet and do triple French doors there asap. You can add a patio, and maybe a low courtyard wall there, later. If financing all this is an issue, I would postpone the painting and roofing unless the roof or stucco is falling off in chunks. Do the windows first. They will make a huge difference in the appearance of your home, not to mention the value they will add. Then budget for the roof and paint as condition of the current roof and walls warrant.
