window furnishing for large glass sliding doors

I need advice on window furnishing for large glass sliding doors in a beach style open plan living room. We had panel curtains which were good at blocking the morning sun on hot days (which is important) but the rest of the time we want it as open as possible for a nice view. Sheer curtains appear to be fashionable but I assume they wont help to block out the heat. Any suggestions?

Hi Catherine. I suggest going for side by side blockout roller blinds in a white or other neutral colour. These will keep out the morning sun. Cover this with a sheer curtain that can be used the rest of the time. Sheers come in varying thicknesses, so you can choose how much light you prefer to let in.

One more question: If I use white shutters, does that mean I have to also have white doors inside the house? Should the internal doors match the window frames or the shutters? There will be a slide and fold door between the living room and an ante-room, which will be of glass with upvc frames; my furniture in my living room have dark brown cane frames, and I have a black antique Chinese lacquer screen, on which are various colours of jade pieces, and a large opium bed of dark mahogany, and also a black grand piano, and the floor is a honey brown Thai Teak on which would go a couple of Persian rugs.

I love your design I have a similar terrace that I always thought to install a trellis, but was never sure how it would look and yours looks great. On the floor a wanted to install the interlocking wood squares, but I'm afraid that they are too high maintenance. Any comments?

If privacy is the issue, get the sliders tinted to about 70%. You'll still get most of the natural light but will have privacy. Now, keep in mind this only works during the day. At night you are exposed. To address this, you may wish to do a floor to ceiling white sheer/linen curtains. The number of folds in the curtain will dictate the amount of visible silhouette at night.
