Help picking backsplash

I am having trouble picking a backsplash for my kitchen. I have white cabinets and a busy granite. I don't want to pick a backsplash and regret it later. My husband wants something busy but I don't want a backsplash that takes attention from my granite. Someone help!!!

Only the granite. Backsplashes like you dh wants are dated and super bad for resale. Subway tile, although a bit boring, is timeless. Find the flair in accessories and things easy to change out.

What a great room! If you enjoy the general Monochromatic feel of your room I'd go with white or silver (see 'option2' photo) and let your accent pillows do the accenting! The blue hue on the wall actually simplifies your color options. Either pull that color in through a patterned application as mentioned above (see 'option1' photo) or just stick to silver/white. I would get rid of that pendant. Here's one link to industrial pendant lights http://www.houzz.com/industrial-pendants Pick a light that you like and show it to your landlord. I bet she/he will say yes to your suggestion since pendant lights can easily be changed. In fact, if there's already a really secure junction box there already i bet they may even go with a ceiling fan light combo if that's what you really want

I take it this isn't your bathroom. The glass could be handmade lead light which means bespoke by someone who makes lead light windows or it could be a transfer applied to a plain glass window. Check on ebay or online sticker/transfer stores for similar. I've never seen a piece like that in Australia so I'm thinking this might be an American antique. It's not normal to put an expensive antique piece in a bathroom and if you did it would be best in a bathroom that only has minimal use. And you would want to have a lot of good exhaust extraction to get rid of moisture. If you picked up one of those repro Indonesian mahogany pieces you would be spending a lot less money and might regard the piece as expendable. You can buy wood hardening sprays that resist moisture from the hardware store and spray the carcass (all the unstained pieces inside) with this stuff to resist moisture. You'd still need a good exhaust system however and keep the room well aired.

if you lighten the cabinets etc, then the stone will appear more prominent. if that is what you want, that is fine. I sensed that you did not like the current counter. I would contact a marble/granite installer to see if they think that the cracks can be filled and polished out. it is pretty common to do this on new installations if it is feasible. they may try to charge you as as much as you would spend on a fabricating a counter out of a new slab if they did not do the original installation.

Your larger subway tile, maybe in a stacked pattern would be good, maybe in a darker color, like a grey from the granite. Use matching grout either way.

In my opinion, I like the larger subway tile. When it comes to the backsplash and granite being so close together, I feel like the white tile wouldn't be competing.

You have to find the tile you like "profile" wise and price first, then the size will be what they have available. I think for traditional, 3 x 6" works well; for more modern look, longer and more narrow. But then you might not get the bevel. You need space to be able to do the bevel.

I think I'm going for a white or bone subwaytile. I put the bone subway next to my granite and it's actually the same color of my granite. What do you think. Should I go with white or bone color?

The best option in this particular situation is picking the perfect white stone that will compliment your granite. Given the picture you provided the best option would be Bianco estremoz which has beautiful warm subtle veining that does not distract the eye. It is both a beautiful stone aesthetically and very strong and durable. If you provide us the dimensions, we will be able to customize the backsplash in the material that works best.
