Kitchen Palette Advice

Hi all,

We are renovating a kitchen in a mid-century modern flat roof house in Melbourne.

The wall adjoining the kitchen is staying, and is a chestnut colour wood panelling (it has more red than the photo shows). It's a relatively small U-shaped kitchen, open to the adjoining dining area.

So, we like white, plain kitchen cabinets (cupboards above and drawers below, in a polytec satin finish) but are having dilemmas about:

1) whether to have all white cabinetry (!)

2) whether to have some darker cabinets (i.e., a warm grey? Do we call that 'greige' now?) below the island bench level and white up top, the other way around, or other ways to break up the white.

3) the colour of the bench top (stone is included in our budget - we had looked at the Caesarstone Osprey or Snow.....trying for a warm edge to any white rather than cool)

4) Integrating this counter top colour with some tiles that we've come across that might fit the bill are these (Beaumont Brooklyn Whitewash):

4) the colour of the splash back. It is currently original turquoise mosaic - we love the colour but in a renovated kitchen that we won't be in long term, I'm leaning towards this being a little risky?

Does anyone have pics or suggestions based on their knowledge/experience, or blending these sorts of colours & finishes?

My humble advice would be to spend a little thought and design and obviously budget into the bathroom (dont forget to make certain that the flooring in the bathroom is water proofed professionally) and kitchen design. This is usually where most of the budget goes. Next would be to rewire the home. Electrical work is also rather expensive these days so make sure you hire a reputable contractor. Rest of decor you could decide later and see how far your budget goes. Renovating is never an easy process, so be patient and decide on what you want first and then communicate this to your designer. As changes later can be very expensive.

Hi Janet, ok I originally sketched on my tab (red) as 1 BR then modified on my phone (blue) for 2Br. hope you’ll get the idea. Master’s with walk-in closet, connected bath with added door (for sharing). kept store at end, open kitchen, Living rm ok to fit a sofa with tv/media cabinet. For dining, I’m seeing to combine your work and dining table. get another similar table to combine with your 1.7 table. (or if budget allows get a long table 1 piece.) dining side you put benches and work side get a high chair. this setting becomes the main feature of your house( my idea only not a rule) the bookshelves be on 1 side and can be longer as needed. hope this brings you more ideas for your new home. cheers! arielc

Hi, the walls, door enclosing br3 need to modify(some hacking). Should be able to fit in what you need. but suggest to move tv to below wall and re-orient seating. All should be fine. cheers ! good home good life

Thanks LesleyH. These are lovely options, herringbone in particular. One of the issues thought is that we need tile floors as we have the whole wall of reddish wood adjacent to the kitchen. I think we have worked out that dark cabinetry is not going to work, which is something!
