Need help with my kitchen

We purchased our home from the couple who originally built in in the mid 1980's. Over time, they had updated, though their style was more like my moms than mine.

Since we moved in I've painted the uppers white, installed the subway tile backsplash, installed the marble shelves, changed the hardware to black, and painted the walls BM Grey Owl.

My question is this: Should I paint the lower run of cabinets white? Paint the brown ceiling molding (it houses the lights for the kitchen) white? I had thought to leave the island as is because I have 6 children that are constantly kicking it when they sit on the barstools to eat. Any other ideas?

Hi!

I think the lower cabs look really awesome as the stain they are. The moulding at the top needs to be white or it creates a racing stripe that visually lowers the ceiling height. And what about one more moulding right where the ceiling meets the wall? That would give you a beautiful tall moulding effect- paint it all, including the wall, the same color white as thew cabinets. Very decadent looking!

I love the first photo shows your lower cabinet reflects to the molding, it bring out nice characters. The most cost effective way is just to paint the island white and leave the cooking side lower cabinet and molding as they are. You will find painting the island white brighten up the whole space and a clear contrast to the black countertops. Good luck!

Your drawing does not show enough information to render much advice. I assume the few dimensions you show are in centimeters ? If you are looking for advice from US designers we are work in inches. The best advice I can offer is to hire a certified kitchen designer. Believe me it will be well worth the money when you consider the dollars spent on a kitchen remodel. Hi Fred, Thanks for the want of the precise measurements. The U shape area in my kitchen is 64" - 104 - 99" (left - centre - right). Height of the kitchen area is 107". The wall with the fridge has total length of 99" Fridge is 32" wide, 29" deep, 73" high (I bought this fridge on a good bargain but realized it was slightly oversized in this kitchen area, but got to live with it now) The wall beside the fridge is 23" deep I know some gap has to be left between this wall, the fridge and the wall mounted/countertop cabinets for ventilation I guess. So I'd say the cabinets on this wall will have a length of only 63"/64"? The microwave is 18.5 wide, 13" deep, 10.5" high The oven is 24" wide, 24" deep, 24" high. The wall next to the fridge which will have this feature cabinet 42" wide, 110" high which is next to the main door. I'm thinking the feature wall is kind of plain, but it covers up where the fridge is sticking out.

Correction: to construct two separate 2 ft run concrete slab at the each opposite end of the 9ft length kitchen (with access of 3 ft space at each end but has 5ft space in the middle)

Don't paint anything else. The lower cabinets are the best thing about this space. And I don't mind the heavy wood moulding above as it adds some personality to the room. I am however sick to DEATH of white bread kitchens devoid of personality, and going all white will make it look like a lab. You could consider removing the tray ceiling down the road and having potlights wired in instead as you will gain much needed ceiling height. I would then save up to replace the uppers and pantry with a more complementary door panel of better quality as they clearly are mismatched.

I like the kitchen very much and even like the wood trim above. What i would change are the stools. They are 80s looking to me. Would love to see some industrial looking ones with some steel or stainless steel to pick up with the fridge....

I like the combination of wood and white the way it is. Yes, when it's time lose that dropped ceiling recessed light box area. What you have done looks nice!

You are much more likely to get chipping or stains on lowers than uppers. If you decide to paint, wait to see how the upper paint job holds up. I like how it is, or if you do paint, do something like blue. What is left stained of the cabinets looks like a nicer wood tone than I usually see in some of the older kitchens - a nice stain color.

I like nuthinontv's expression "whit bread kitchen" - yes, it is being so overplayed. I am so glad you did not paint the walls dark gray:) I like the individuality of this kitchen.
