6 years agoYou also might want to consider stained lowers or lower cabinets painted a darker color - darker gray or blue. One thing I like about the following pics is they have some personality - not just the same white kitchen that is becoming a bit ubiquitous.

Comments (16)Thanks, lefty47. This is an older home, and just as One Plan guessed it is a soil stack from the upstairs bathroom. You are probably right that the cost of a custom solution may outweigh the benefits. Another idea I had, along the lines of the worktop bin suggested by One Plan, is a recessed spatula and long-handled utensil holder. I found out that Lee Valley sells motorized tv lift kits like the one used in the video above. It would be a matter of getting the contractor to build the box to go on the lift. I'm still a bit hung up on the idea, though it probably falls into your cost-outweighs-benefit category! Comments (8)Hi Rhonda, i also recently redid my terrace and installed a wet and dry island in my kitchen. As for your floor plan, if you're willing to consider tearing down the maid's room and moving it to the back, it will free up a lot of space for your dry kitchen/dining area. A bit unconventional, but you can also install the island in between the 2 pillars that are in the center. You can then install pot racks or wine glass holders on top of your island. 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoyes, factory finish wears better than on-site painted finish. Ikea could be a good option except for their bizarre choice to offer only off-white and not white cabinets right now. there are probably good choices at the box stores -- I know that Diamond cabinets also offer a TrueColor finish that's not paint but a laminate, which performs well and looks nice while saving money over paint -- again, might make it less painful to imagine replacing a damaged door if you went that way.

6 years agojhmarie, we don't have a large kitchen, so I don't know if doing different colors would make it look to closed off and busy? Currently we have 30" ugly oak cabinets with 9ft ceilings, so it probably looks smaller than it truly is. Here are pictures from MLS before we purchased it last year. The floors are darker now and the paint is a light greige. We are going to replace the counter tops and backsplash also.
