Family Room: Need rug and coffee table suggestions

Hi All,

I need your help and advice for my family room. As you can see, thus far we have 2 taupe sofas and 2 blue accent chairs for our family room. I would like to move forward with a rug and coffee table next. But I'm stuck with what color rug and coffee table would best tie the seating area together with our present color choices. Thanks in advance!

Extra info:

- I am going to put a silver metallic garden stool in between the two accent chairs.

- Will be adding crown molding, curtain rods, and drapes very soon.

- The room will be painted Revere Pewter.

- We will be getting rid of the tv console and mounting a brand new tv. So the wood tv console pictured in the room can be ignored.

Velvet sofas, revere pewter, and beautiful millwork like you have suggest to me that this will be a traditional, sophisticated, polished, somewhat glam space. Because it's open concept and you already have the wood dining table and the wood floors, I would stay away from a heavy wood coffee table. First instinct says, maybe something gilded and glass? (Which you could get away with if you don't have kids, otherwise we should brainstorm alternatives!). I think something with some sort of metal would be nice and feel polished in the room. It strikes me as needing warm/gold more than silver, but if the dining room light is staying and you mention a silver garden stool, you may want to consider cooler metals as well. For the rug, I'd want to see the drapes first. Have you picked the out yet? Otherwise, do you have an accent color in mind? You might try to find a rug that has a favorite color in it that you can pull out for throw pillows and throws.

Hi Claire! I have been drawn to glass/metal for a coffee table for this room. But then thought that it should be "less formal" since it will be an everyday room. So then I thought maybe an oversized cocktail ottoman might be less formal. And got stuck on color. We have a 7 year old.

I don't really have any drape ideas yet either and have been struggling with an accent color. We like grays, blues, and silver.

I would get rid of that pendant. Here's one link to industrial pendant lights http://www.houzz.com/industrial-pendants Pick a light that you like and show it to your landlord. I bet she/he will say yes to your suggestion since pendant lights can easily be changed. In fact, if there's already a really secure junction box there already i bet they may even go with a ceiling fan light combo if that's what you really want

So is it a chair and a sofa? If nothing else they are a conversation piece! No one could ever enter your room w/o saying something. I love your idea. But if you are serious, remove the like striped pillow covers, and replace them with plain any colored pillow covers or continue the fun & add a zig zag black & white area rug & one or two more striped items, such as lamps & a painted zebra coffee table. I love it.

Hi Dagobert Duck (interesting name), I am assuming that this is a townhouse in Asia, as you mention the dry kitchen and wet kitchen (terms used mostly in Singapore) and also from the visible lift on the plan that you shared. I would definitly advice you to keep the dry kitchen and place the dining table close to the dry kitchen or close to the bay window on the left. The space here is rather large and can easily accommodate a regular 2 metre table with 8 chairs. If you are concerned about the view of dining table as you enter the house, you could always place a round table near the entrance to block off the view. I agree with Elaine about placing the furniture away from walls. Place a bunch of fresh flowers or art/sculpture above the round table like in a hotel entrance. So the the first view you see when you enter the house is the table with flowers. Its difficult to give you any further advice as we have no idea what your final vision of the place is? It might be better to post a daytime picture. I would pull the shades up and never use that overhead light. It is very harsh and does not show true colors. That new pic would likely generate many good responses.

I have an almost seven year old who still has to be reminded not to jump on the furniture. Is yours more mellow than mine? If so, I think you can get away with glass and metal because it doesn't have to look formal. And they have coffee tables in fun geometric shapes that look almost playful to me. But otherwise, an ottoman can work too and if you can find one that has a metallic base or legs to it it will keep it from looking like a giant mass of fabric.

Claire - I really like your ottoman suggestion. My hubby thinks we can get away with glass with the 7 year old. Any glass/metal suggestions?

I really like these. I think they are polished but fun, not too formal. I think I'd want to see a daytime photo before recommending gold over silver.

Hi Jck910! I think the rugs you suggested are beautiful. I like the middle one the most. I think the others are not quite my taste. However, I am very curious to see if it meshes well with the taupe sofas and blue accent chairs.
