What color should I paint my cedar hope chest?

I have a Lane cedar hope chest that my grandmother bought for me when I graduated high school. 16 years ago I loved the light feminine style. Now it goes with nothing in my house. I want to paint it. My bedroom furniture is black, kind of distressed. I'm leaning towards that but want opinions and other ideas. I love all the painted furniture people are doing. FYI our room is fairly neutral. Our comforter is gray, although I have a black/cream duvet (we just haven't been using it, it needs buttons replaced) sheets and curtains are like a golden yellow. Neutral walls/carpets. The last picture shows the pattern on my duvet.

Comments (8)One more question: If I use white shutters, does that mean I have to also have white doors inside the house? Should the internal doors match the window frames or the shutters? Comments (4)Your second photo brings me right to the stairwell scene in Hitchcock's "Vertigo," although I realize I'm looking up, not down. It's really rather wonderful. I'm just wondering, looking to the upper left in particular, if it's been recently checked out by a structural engineer. As for paint, I'll be interested to see what others say. For me, who doesn't do a lot of white, I think I actually would stay with a white here. A muddy green might be nice as well, but you'd need to incorporate a bit of lighting -- perhaps uplighting along the beams unseen from below, with something amazing hanging from that cool, crazy peak you have. I bet she/he will say yes to your suggestion since pendant lights can easily be changed. I’ve decided to incorporate everyone’s comments. 1) Using Nippon rememberance for the wall color 2) Using pastel curtains with 3M to cover the ugly door and meter box 3) Making my own night stand from books 4) Getting a big art piece for the side wall 5) Putting a 55 inch TV at the foot of my bed for well, extravagance Some quick questions... 1) what color curtains and table top work best with this shade of grey? For the table top, I might get a fresh piece of wood and laminate myself. 2) what modern frame do you recommend for this wall and this kind of art, or should I drop the frame, and innovate, maybe just get a big piece of plastic and glue the sides? ;) 3) any fun ideas for the TV stand? I don’t want to rent a minivan just to transport the tv stand, and the space between my bed and the planned curtain is tiny - like 45cm.
