Should I paint my hickory cabinets white?
My Kitchen has beautiful hickory cabinets but the entire kitchen feels very dark and too busy. The slate floors are super dark, and heated making it very difficult to remove.
i have always loved white cabinets for the clean bright look of white. Counter tops are granite that will match any color which I love. Any suggestions?
Should I have them painted or is there anything to do to improve them?

Comments (12)I would seriously consider replacing the cabinets before putting a new granite countertop on them. The problem is that no one will remove the countertop at a later date if you want to change the cabinets, due to the possibility of breakage. The only choice you will have then is a reface. Adding new doors, drawer fronts, and veneered sides is just a facelift. You could also add new hardwood drawers with undermount cushion close slides, but by the time you do this if will be the same cost as new cabinets now. The cabinets you have now, frameless, particle board sides are notorious for having the hinge screws strip out the particle board they are attached to. Since you can't put a longer screw in them, because the material is only 3/4" of an inch thick you have a problem. Comments (3)I would definitely consider an off white colour as this will be a safe, and probably more attractive option with the colours your stated on your bed. However the sheen may not go well with the green and white laminate, if the chandelier go well with the decor of the room then I think going for a sheen finish could easily finish off the room! However if not it could really make your room have two contrasting style schemes. Off white would also look good, but if you like a bit a glam, then a sheen finish is a fantastic option! What other stuff do you have in your room? Is it possible to upload a picture as many 'minds' can make light work lol. I would say just a tad more yellow if your husband can bear it, doesn't have to be solid yellow. I'd add something else on the left shelves (I'd move one shelf of photos to the right hand shelving and swap for some books), maybe a ginger jar if you can get an old one. Maybe a patterned throw or cushion for your wooden chair and a small yellow throw for the bench just draped over the corner. Table idea sounds great. Are you happy with it? Comments (2)Hi Sivasankari Suppas, Your designer and you probably have decided what laminates to choose by now as your tiles have been chosen and laid on floor and walls. To go against the grain now would not be advisable as we can clearly see that a solid colour will work now as you have lots of pattern on the wall and floor. We would recommend a solid charcoal colour so it will appear dark (black) but not be solid as we can understand your concern of finger prints and marks when its solid black. 4 years agoThank you! I will try in our master bath first, as the cabinets are throughout the house. Just to be sure they look good. We will be replacing the counter tops and the back splash. Maybe glass tiles for the back splash with white and browns to pull all of the colors together. We have already replaced the floors with dark planks. Will be replacing the light fixtures and hardware, also. Would love to enclose the top of the cabinets. I have looked at how to do that.

4 years agoFor the stove area I painted the large tiles grey and the small ones white. It made such a huge difference.

i have hickory cabinets and a darker granite counter top. I want to paint the cabinets white but change the granite To something lighter.

Love the kitchen, but want to brighten it up. I saw a kitchen where a friend painted a white wash on the cabinets & it looked super. Do you recommend doing the same with these?

Your kitchen is really beautiful but that is a lot of wood. Whitewash might create more texture but maybe a milk paint or actual paint could lighten up the space and make it a little more country modern. If it were my kitchen I might keep some of the wood and update countertops and maybe the ceilings. It certainly is a beautiful space. Here are some kitchens below that use the wood but add some areas of light or paint. Just ideas that might help think about the space.

2 years agoI never thought in a million years we would paint our hickory cabinets. Just so outdated and very much not the modern theme we were looking for. We tried redecorating around them...just didn't cut it for me. So...we did this and LOVE it. Best of all, if down the road we want the original look back...we just sand it--we tried and it worked.
