Run off issues?

I have a yard similar although not quite so steep and the slope is towards the back of my house. I have two retaining walls, similar to this set up, and have run off issues at the ends of each wall where the mulch ends up washing out into the grass. How do you control that here?

DC: We have not had any issues with runoff washing mulch into the grass, especially as the planting has grown in to fill the entire bed area. Perhaps your issue could be resolved by planting more densely, so you have less area of mulch.

Mirrors to make it dissapear. Red paint to make it a feature. With a television or a screen so you have too smaller rooms. With a low surrond table/benches so that it is a centrepiece. With columns/stripes elsewhere in the room so that they repeat the theme it creates. With the wall colour as if it is a non issue. With a chainsaw so it goes way. With outward-facing lights so it is too glary to look at any way. With same curtains that are acoss the windows so that it is camoflaged and looks less substantial. With one of those weird-sounding-named perspective pictures so that you can enjoy looking "through" it from one or more particular places. As a Greek column so that you can convey that you undertand and participate in ironic postmodern architecture. By scraping half of the covering off and adding roofing material and drainage to the other side so that you can tell your friends that you particpate in deconstructive architecture. Surround it with an aquarium. Surround it with an indoor garden jungle. String a hammock or two off it so you can say, "man we were so lucky to have this coumn here so we could hang our hammocks and still be able to use all the room!" With a same-strength steel coumn that is just as strong. Replace it with a beam from one side to the other so that it is no longer structurally required. Run a wall up to it. Or, if someone asks you, "how can you decorate a square pillar or column in the middle of a living room?", you can say "um, it seemed like a good idea at the time, do you think that I shouldn't have?"

Are you saying that cooking next to the chute would gross you out even if its covered? Andd to use it for its intended purpose? In the first picture, it looks like the stove is directly underneath the chute, but I can see in other pics that it is not. I think it is far enough away. If everything is bagged properly, it shouldn't be that bad. You will have to check on local code regarding having the stove next to the window. Code may make your decision for you. People usually just put shorter cabinets above that type of range hood. I would recommend doing so because you need all the storage you can get. The hood--being different from the bank of cabinets--will provide relief to the eye. With cabinets above, it'll still feel balanced. And, as for covering the chute, do you want to cover it and restrict access or do you still need to use it for its intended purpose and just want to camouflage it? To help the room feel pleasant, cheery, and light, I recommend using a glass tile. Even though it's applied to a wall, the translucency still shows and evokes a sense of the adjectives above. I think it would help keep things light. Consider a slightly higher toe-kick underneath the lower cabinets. It helps to create a lighter-footed feeling. You could also consider cabinets that have furniture style feet. for a more open feeling. Your kitchen seems like an ideal room to use modern, lacquered cabinets. I don't know if you like the super-modern look, but I think it could be nice. Maybe just for the uppers. Use a medium-to-light toned wood on the bottom. A limestone floor might be nice. Or you can do wood or laminate. You could go with dark or light. I think it's mostly about preference.

Hard to say just from your description. Might take a clever stair designer to come up with a better solution for you. Are you thinking for esthetics or function or both? Is this a remodel? Please give us some more info so we can help. work out the wall space you want to cover, measure this on the floor. then start laying out our design within the space on the floor to create your design. There has to be lines running through the collage so there is a method to the madness- we don't want a messy looking arrangement, there must be a flow. You can line up the matts with outside edge of other frames etc. Layout all of your pics on the floor and mix up the frame styles and sizes amongst your layout. Take photos of your layout and then start hanging. My tip is don't start hanging until you have your plan 100% !!! lots of neck stretches too! i recently put together this collage and need a neck massage afterwards ;-)
