Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help with kitchen colors please

Hi All!
We are finally getting around to updating our kitchen and I could use some advice. Cabinets will stay Java. We are redoing the island. It will be rectangle and turned parallel to the sink/fridge wall. There will be a prep sink and cook top in it. Wall ovens will be replaced with a single oven and a microwave. Cabinet above the existing microwave will be replaced with a longer one to match the one on the left. We will be using quartz for the countertops. The kitchen is very bright-lots of natural light. I’m open to changing paint color. Support pole can’t be moved. Floors are honey oak and will be refinished to either a light raw wood or a medium neutral tone.

Questions:
1. What color quartz?
2. What color backsplash?
3. Should the new island be java also or is there a color that looks nice with the nearly black existing cabs?
4. Anything else that stands out that I should consider?

I would consider a light quartz in some sort of marble veining- there are many to choose from- I've posted silestone's eternal calcutta gold. Both the island and perimeter counters. Your island could go the same as your cabinets, white or you could look into Sherwin Williams Loggia- it's a nice warm stone color. picture below. I would suggest an elongated white subway style backsplash- the one pictured below is from one of our jobs- it's hard to tell in the photo but it has a wave to it that bounces the light. I've pictured a warm style of pendant that you could do multiples of over your island. wall color shown is Sherwin William's Gossamer Veil. Its a nice warm and very light. Can look grey. I've also attached a photo of a paneled column. It might be nice to add some visual weight to the support column between the living room and kitchen. trimming it out could make it feel more like an established piece and not something you have to work around. My main concern with adding the cabinet in place of the microwave is making sure you match the existing style and color of current cabinets correctly. Good luck and have fun!

I think your ideas are nice. What stands out to me is that all of your furniture is dark also. I did this when I moved into my home and I desperately want to change that.

Hi joyce_jj_chen, lovely home! Sharing my 2 cents: I think you've got a great living/dining space with lots of potential. The sofas can be moved closer to the TV to make space for dining. While not exactly a matching for your floor plan, this is a possible inspiration: Given the ample amount of reflective materials in your space (floors, mirrors), I'd go for some soft or matte textured furnishings or to balance things out and give the entire space coziness and warmth. Possible inspirations: Here it's the curtains that diffuse light that comes into the apartment, matte dark walls absorb and soften light, while greenery lifts the entire space. The example you've suggested is lovely, all the more so because of a contrast between matte (cabinetry, kitchen island) and shiny (fixtures, kitchen island countertop) and of course lovely warm lighting overhead. (consider using warm lighting instead of cool white?) For dramatic effect, or simply to add more warmth, a large rug is a good idea too: Hope this helps, I'm sure other will have great ideas too.

Hi Rhonda, i also recently redid my terrace and installed a wet and dry island in my kitchen. As for your floor plan, if you're willing to consider tearing down the maid's room and moving it to the back, it will free up a lot of space for your dry kitchen/dining area. A bit unconventional, but you can also install the island in between the 2 pillars that are in the center. You can then install pot racks or wine glass holders on top of your island. Regarding the dark furniture....the 2 original pics are from the owners before-it’s all I could find. We do have a dark couch but that’s really the only dark besides the cabinets. Our kitchen table is white. I totally get what you’re saying....I’m not a huge fan of dark colors but the dark cabinets don’t bother me like I thought they would. All the natural light makes a huge difference. Thank you!

Something like Viatera Quartz surface from LG with simple cream backsplash would look nice. My cabinets are not as dark as yours, but we have a similar look going on. We just did a facelift earlier this year. Here is my kitchen below. We went with Fiore Bianco granite/cream crackle backsplash & i'm so in love with it.
