This beautiful table was custom-made for the homeowner by a local wood-shop.

David - Thanks! Appreciate that you even drew out the plan. :) You are absolutely right, it's been difficult finding an optimum layout. In fact, our current layout is more or less the same as your plan. Would you have chosen different furniture - a smaller sofa or a different dining table perhaps? (Also, I'm curious: is there a good reason why the architect had the pillar like that?) Mona - Do you mean having a buffet at the entry? I currently do have a sideboard, though it wouldn't fit at the entry - it's about 67" wide by 18" deep. It's currently placed in the middle of the long wall. There's actually still sufficient clearance between it and the 3-seater sofa in David's plan. plague - The household shelter is a local (Singapore) building requirement. Its walls are reinforced and is meant to be a shelter in times of emergency. It can't be removed, and any renovations carried out cannot affect its integrity (there is a list of permitted and prohibited works). Normally it is just used as a pantry or storeroom.

Islands are usually designed at counter height so that the cook can also use the island as a part of the prep area of the kitchen. However, you can design your island low if you want. A nice table might be another option............

Go with the leather that is a shade lighter that the floors. Otherwise it could get lost in blur of grey. Use accent colors in the lamp shades,wall art and throws. I also like the white table better. The metal table is more industrial. Than the style you are going for.

room shape plays a role of course. If it cannot accommodate the width of a round table, you have to stick with rectangular. If you have room to accommodate both, it is the type of entertaining you do, which might influence the decision. a 120cm diameter round table can accommodate 4-5 people comfortably. if you make the table much larger than that, you lose intimacy. A split round table, with a 40cm insert can help accommodate another 3-4 pax, before getting crammed. with a rectangular table, you initially have the option of sitting across, 2 or 4 pax, or at one end, 3 pax, thereby maintaining intimacy. once the table is full, the far end tend to be too distant to hold a conversation.
