Exterior Design Dilemma!
Hi all! House is 30 years old. Was remodeled completely in 2017, just before we purchased. Is nearly perfect inside. Outside is not bad - but is bland and could use help. Thinking of replacing shrubs for some of different colors and heights. We added a small Rose of Sharon tree at the left, but have yet to do more. I am thinking of adding flower boxes below the front left windows and the right porch cut-out. I think something like shutters would pop, but not exactly shutters. I need help!! Please! The more specific the better. Thank you,

I do agree you need major landscaping and I would start with a walkway from the street to the front door, remove all those over pruned shrubs and look at beautiful foundation plantings . and no window boxes You have lots of space out front to do nice deep beds

Furniture layout for an awkward open floor plan
Comments (5)David - Thanks! Appreciate that you even drew out the plan. :) You are absolutely right, it's been difficult finding an optimum layout. In fact, our current layout is more or less the same as your plan. Would you have chosen different furniture - a smaller sofa or a different dining table perhaps? (Also, I'm curious: is there a good reason why the architect had the pillar like that?) Mona - Do you mean having a buffet at the entry? I currently do have a sideboard, though it wouldn't fit at the entry - it's about 67" wide by 18" deep. It's currently placed in the middle of the long wall. There's actually still sufficient clearance between it and the 3-seater sofa in David's plan. plague - The household shelter is a local (Singapore) building requirement. Its walls are reinforced and is meant to be a shelter in times of emergency. It can't be removed, and any renovations carried out cannot affect its integrity (there is a list of permitted and prohibited works). Comments (28)Hi Few points: 1. It's not an independent residential apartment. It is a flat in a 25storey block 2. I have attached the floor plan for reference. The entrance is not too huge. 3. It's good to know that you guys have liked the Bathroom & kitchen design. The tiling work is in progress and it has come out well. I will take few snaps and post 4. When I say resort look - I understand and mean a simplistic natural looking design. More towards wood, nature, green, matt finish etc... Hope i am not confusing anyone here 5. Do you think the bathroom & kitchen design gels with what I mean by resort look. 6. The foyer area is a small (not too big) entrance. It's like a passage as you can see in the pics I posted earlier. When you enter you don't see the entire living room rather you see the wall (kitchen wall), where we intend to keep our dining table. Comments (4)I would get rid of that pendant. Here's one link to industrial pendant lights http://www.houzz.com/industrial-pendants Pick a light that you like and show it to your landlord. I bet she/he will say yes to your suggestion since pendant lights can easily be changed. In fact, if there's already a really secure junction box there already i bet they may even go with a ceiling fan light combo if that's what you really want...See Morecalidesign

4 years agoCute home. You can tell some care has been put into its history. Have you ever considered removing the brick arch and replacing it with white columns? Placing carriage lights on them? I can also see a walkway leading up the front. I might relocate the house numbers as well.

4 years agoI would make bigger changes. Here is a Before and After on a home. The brick was limewashed and a courtyard created in the front yard.

4 years agoThank you all so very much! While I do not believe we will be doing anything "bigger," we will definitely use many of your ideas with our landscape design. Although the pictures do not capture it well, there is a concrete walkway from the porch to the drive-way (the common rounded box wood type shrubs are along the brick, while the variegated lower ones are on the street side.) I'm going to talk to my husband about moving it or about adding another, but either way, lots more planting. I have a fatal lung disease and my medicines prevent me from doing any dirt related activities (not that I mind, as I have an aversion to earthworms.) Anyway, I want to set the outside up nicely so that my husband can water and do light up-keep to be grounded in nature when I am no longer here to talk his ear off - hahaha! I will begin to research low maintenance, zone 6 plants, but again, any help would be great. Thank you all
for being so helpful! The one tree we did plant is a Rose of Sharon shrub trained into a single trunk. It is supposed to max out at 8-12 feet - so hopefully a good size for the edge of the house. I may also look into removing the arch.
