Need help on lighting design! Skylight in the hallway or bathroom?

Hi Houzz community,

Need your help on placing 2 skylights. Do you think we should place them in the hallway (shown as light yellow on the plan) or in the bathrooms (shown as dark yellow)?

The skylights we are looking at are called Solatube Smart LED. They act as skylights in the day, and LED lights in the night. The LED has a color temperature of 3000K (same as incandescent lamps) and a light output of 635 lumens (light up 250 SF). So I am guessing they are going to be pretty bright. In addition, the LED's are not dimmable.

I am having a hard time deciding where they should go. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and ideas.

I had skylights in my bathroom in a house I lived in and I LOVED them! You will spend more time in your bathrooms and the natural daylight is so helpful!

A standard 60 watt bulb is about 800 lumens, so it isn't that bright. Also, make sure they are listed for damp or wet locations if you put them over a tub or shower.

Is this actually a 1,260 square foot house or apartment? I would suggest you turn Bedroom 2 into a large master bath attached to the master bedroom. Then, the two small hall bathrooms could be turned into one larger bathroom to serve guests and the person who uses Bedroom 3. If the bathroom fixtures are in good shape, you could use them over to save money and rely on paint and colorful accessories to make the two new bathrooms attractive. If you still want a third bedroom, I suggest you turn the study into a third bedroom. If you could take out the storage closet between the kitchen and the one entry door, this area in the lower right-hand corner of the floor plan could be the dining area, and the living/dining room could serve as one large living room.

Hi Amuro Elaine, Are you working with an interior designer to renovate your home? You'll probably be asked a few questions such as: How many people will live here? Is the bedroom wall a structural, load-bearing wall? Do you intend to entertain? But what an interesting space you have, and especially if you are living alone, there's so much potential to transforming it into your own pretty pad! If I were you, I would swap the living space with the bedroom, that means hacking the bedroom wall open, and then erecting a wall from that point where your kitchen wall ends. Have the wall in glass, with sliding glass doors, so that you can open it up when you have guests over. And when you're alone, you'll be able to enjoy the entire length of the apartment from your bed. Here's a photo of the wall idea:Keep us posted on the progress of your renovation, please :)

I've done a few similar units and created an island. The wc area has too many utilities (waste pipes etc) to be fully removed, plus living in a Maisonette myself, I find it practical to keep a powder room downstairs. You could push the wall between the front door (if you are able to purchase the access area, you can move the front door out as well for even more foyer space). In its place could be full height cabinets as well as your fridge. At the back wall you could plan your basin and hob on the island (or the other way around). My preference is to place a glass wall and door to the yard, so you have the washing machine away from the kitchen and another layer between the kitchen and the powder room. The chute is contained then as well, which works pretty ok. Your laundry will be out of sight if the glass is frosted, but still provides plenty of light. Hi, I agree with Gary, do a hotel setting to make it more appealing. Here’s an idea. Remove the partition, move the closet down and add a big slider freeing up the space for a spacious bedroom with lounge seating/dining by the window. Think about the tv wall where it can have a proper work desk space. And do you have balcony? Perfect !

Looks good as is. I would double check how expensive the bulbs are to replace and how hard the process is to replace them, so you can be prepared for that if needed.
