Need help with front entrance, please.

Hello,

I would appreciate some help on what to do with the front entrance. The gap on the right of the steps has always bothered me and I would like to replace the steps and somehow hide the downspout so that it is not in the way of the walkway. There is very little slope where the downspout is and so I thought if we carried the first step right to the garage we could put it under the first step?

Any help would be very appreciated. I am not great a design and it has got me stumped. Thanks!

Karen, I'd be bothered by that gap too. If you do replace the steps, I'd extend them all the way to the side wall if possible.

If you don't replace the steps, maybe replace the existing brown lantern/pot(?) with something brighter, maybe a container planting on a pedestal, with an uplight beneath it so it's not a black hole at night? A tree with uplighting would be lovely, but I can't think of any species that would be narrow enough for the space and not so tall that it would obstruct your mailbox.

Bringing the steps all the way out to the garage would look positively massive… I think you probably don't want to do that. You also probably wouldn't want to create a puddle at the bottom of your steps.

You should be able to install a drain inlet beneath the downspout that could run beneath the walkway and out into the landscaping, with a "pop up" outlet at the end of the run. Talk with a licensed landscape contractor about that—they can determine where the best location would be for the outlet, and how to build the system.

A brick mason can build you a brick-facade box that will fill the space where the urn is now. It would be level with the porch and come out flush to the house wall, no need to move the railing. They can probably get a pretty good match to either the concrete porch color (after it is pressure washed it will be lighter) or the reddish bricks.

The only option really as Emily says is the the bottom left side wall of your plan. I wouldn't suggest putting it in front of the balcony - that's just not good circulation. And any ways you'd probably have a problem with electricity and plugging in your components and have wires all over the floor in front of the balcony. Put it on that wall and use a swivel mount so you can angle the TV around as you need to. You could also use a lift cabinet if you want to conceal your TV at times...

Hello Cody, If the TV isn't going on the mantle wall than the only other available wall is the 13'5" wall. You might think about moving the TV to this wall and balancing it with art or plants. Your sofa can be turned with its back to the entrance/stairs and a small console table can be placed behind it to act as a visual stop. Your chair can be placed where the sofa currently sits or you could add a pair of new chairs to this area near the stair alcove which would create a smaller seating cluster there. Small benches could be placed in front of the fire for additional seating, when and if necessary. This one is a challenge, but if you don't mind the TV as focal point and the sofa perpendicular to the fireplace, this could work. IN my case the curtains are less about Privacy, but more about making the room visually higher & covering windows that are not too attractive. Hi 4eva zx, It's not optimum if you don't want to build a bespoke TV wall/console where I've placed the TV here (suggest that you get something where you can swivel the TV towards the sofa, or slightly extend that wall so the TV can be directly in front of the sofa), but in terms of spatial efficiency, your round table would be better placed like so: This is so that it's near the kitchen and you can use it for meals for more than two people. This placement will also allow you to make this family heirloom a visual focal point and conversation piece for your home. If you ever need to use a bigger table for gatherings with more people, you can simply put a rectangular top onto the round table and seat 6-8 people – the placement provides for space that allows this. Find a good ID or decorator who will work towards incorporating this family heirloom in your new home, and you'll be able to enjoy it for years to come. Hope this helps!
