Help make my cabin kitchen more cabiny

This is my white kitchen in our cabin. They are laminate. Not happy with them but can't replace now. How can I make it more "cabiny".

Comments (7)So you just want to enclose the top area to make it a place to sleep? Does it need to have a kitchen and bathroom or just a sleeping area? I am not an architect but you might want to ask more direct questions like " How can I enclose this upper floor to make it livable?". It looks like you live in a very mild climate. Perhaps you should put up wood walls with windows that match the design on the balcony panels. Will the carport be parked with a vehicle for the majority of time? Comments (8)Hi Rhonda, i also recently redid my terrace and installed a wet and dry island in my kitchen. As for your floor plan, if you're willing to consider tearing down the maid's room and moving it to the back, it will free up a lot of space for your dry kitchen/dining area. A bit unconventional, but you can also install the island in between the 2 pillars that are in the center. You can then install pot racks or wine glass holders on top of your island. Comments (11)Hi, I am currently renovating my kitchen. Pictures of my tiles are below. I love wood grain cabinets. However, i am at odds as to whether I should get wood grained or solid coloured laminates. My designer told me that I can only choose from Arova n Jennings brand. He does offer EDL as well. But I do not like the solid colours from any of these laminate companies. A solid black colour will leave finger print marks easily. And I think grey is going to make my kitchen look monochromatic which I feel might get boring overtime. Some advice is really needed....See MoreClaudianne Young

10 years agoI had a similar issue with a white corner cabinet. I too have a small house in the country that has many decorating challenges and I've always had budget constraints. Therefore, I've learned to paint almost everything including laminate. I've attached a picture of the cabinet that I painted with a mixture of decorative painting glazing and interior latex paint. Another option is decoupage. I've attached a couple of samples of birch bark wallpaper. You could also use gift wrap. Of course you will need to seal it. I've used a decorating decoupage book for help. Martha Stewart products have lots of faux painting products, too. It all needs sealing or wear and tear in the kitchen will be a problem.

10 years agoToday's refacing techniques are much better than they used to be. It is a viable option and more affordable than replacing cabinets, counters and fixtures. There are examples here on Houzz, like this one:

If you are looking for an even cheaper solution, how about removing the doors on the upper cabinets and then framing the openings with a pretty trim? Of course that means keeping your open shelves organized, but doing so would be pretty enough to distract the eye from the base cabinets, on which you could keep the doors, just replace the hardware with something more unique and attractive.texellie

10 years agolast modified: 10 years agoyou could go this "open shelving" route, but you have to be VERY tidy and have well selected kitchenware (or it just ends up looking like a cluttered mess). It's a look I personally really like though, and wouldn't be all that expensive to replicate.
