Design Dilemma Lighting

Ceiling Mounted Lights

My husband does not want to consider anything other that ceiling mounted lights. No pendants, no false ceiling. Any suggestions on how to find such lights that don't look dated? This IKEA lamp is the only design we can agree on so far:

That is a nice light. Do ask though if he's going to do the bug cleaning? Enclosed or close to ceiling lights like that do collect their fair share of flatbacking critters. ...

I'm not convinced in having this in every room in the house though! I like variety.

5'2" is 62 inches, and our guide to lighting sizing (http://bit.ly/1cuh1Fj) suggests that 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop (not the floor, however) is a good height if you have 8-foot ceilings. So, depending on the height of your table, everything might be okay!

Hi Emmarene; thanks for your suggestion. I am with you that I feel water proof lights is the only way to go here really. Also, you are quite right: recessed lights are not an option (the existing cavities are not deep enough, and contractors are rightfully apprehensive about drilling deeper as they fear they may affect the wasterproofing). The lights you are suggesting - flat square/rectangular - is exactly what I have been looking for, but to no avail. Are these specimen that you came across waterproof? Could you kindly send me the link to the sources/vendors if possible? Cheers!

Ceiling lights are for overall brightness and you can control which areas to light up. As for pendant lighting, it is more concentrated so it will not brighten the whole area. Especially in 50's and 60's houses, they often went through and put one kind of fixture, in the center of every room and the halls, and they were two bulb rectangular flat glass, frosted, sort of fluted edges and a simple (wheat pattern is what I grew up with) and they caught every bug around. I understand wanting variety, sometimes it may be the way to give a unified look to the house. Those look a lot more than the typical inexpensive utilitarian lights though.

There are a ton of ceiling mounted options and even semi-flush (depending on your ceiling height. What is your budget and ideally what metal finish?
