Kitchen nightmares (help!)

Hey guys!

Just bought a townhome and am stuck with the kitchen. We definitely need some sort of backsplash and a new coat of paint. Do any of you helpful friends out there have any ideas to modern up this kitchen? Would LOVE feedback.

I would start by choosing a paint color. ( http://www.squidoo.com/using-color-in-your-home will demystify that process and help you narrow down your options). Can your budget include glass or ceramic tile for a backsplash or are you looking for less costly options? How do you feel about painting the cabinets or do you want to leave them white? Once you have one or more colors in mind, least expensive way to go would be to change the cabinet hardware. You can cut out the center panels in the upper cabinets and replace them with glass for a more open contemporary look that doesn't involve major work or expense.

Other than not having a backsplash, I dont' see what's so bad about it.

You can easily do a subway tile backspash in the cream color in your granite.

Take the valance down, and get some curtains in your favorite color. You also need a rug under your table.

Hi, Could you add a pic of the lounge area outside bedrooms? There seem to be too many palettes of colours within furniture from white tv cabinet to dark brown book shelf to light brown dining to black/blue/beige sitting pieces. Tie up sitting by adding few cushions in possibly black/white/blue combo. Extend sitting area of living through the entire span of AC wall. You need a larger rug for this space. Angle dining table between 30 to 45 degrees with long length between detached counter corner to bookshelf end towards lounge. This will add the flow to lounge. Add a table runner along the centre of the long length. You need larger artwork pics or a collection of art pieces on living room wall behind beige sofa. Lounge can have a console and wall with a composition of family picture frames to personalise space. Remove blue artwork in the last pic. Instead, you can add a composition of wall shelves with artefacts on them or wall hooks with hanging artefacts. Rugs, table lamps, floor lamps and few bold decorative pieces will add the required warmth. A round centre table in the living room can be good.

Are you saying that cooking next to the chute would gross you out even if its covered? Andd to use it for its intended purpose? In the first picture, it looks like the stove is directly underneath the chute, but I can see in other pics that it is not. I think it is far enough away. If everything is bagged properly, it shouldn't be that bad. You will have to check on local code regarding having the stove next to the window. Code may make your decision for you. People usually just put shorter cabinets above that type of range hood. I would recommend doing so because you need all the storage you can get. The hood--being different from the bank of cabinets--will provide relief to the eye. With cabinets above, it'll still feel balanced. And, as for covering the chute, do you want to cover it and restrict access or do you still need to use it for its intended purpose and just want to camouflage it? To help the room feel pleasant, cheery, and light, I recommend using a glass tile. Even though it's applied to a wall, the translucency still shows and evokes a sense of the adjectives above. I think it would help keep things light. Consider a slightly higher toe-kick underneath the lower cabinets. It helps to create a lighter-footed feeling. You could also consider cabinets that have furniture style feet. for a more open feeling. Your kitchen seems like an ideal room to use modern, lacquered cabinets. I don't know if you like the super-modern look, but I think it could be nice. Maybe just for the uppers. Use a medium-to-light toned wood on the bottom. A limestone floor might be nice. Or you can do wood or laminate. You could go with dark or light. I think it's mostly about preference.

Hello there :) Nice design by the way. Perhaps you can: 1. Change the door panels only. Keep the existing shape & the cupboards, the carpenter can 'update' the doors with different handles too (like image above). 2. Spray paint is more $$$ but I think it is longer lasting. 3. Laminated is less $$ but as we all know it chips & eventually the laminate comes out (wear & tear). 4. Unless you want the inside of the cabinet to be changed from existing white to a different colour, then the carpenter have to dismantle everything & redo. Lose the valence. Find a fabric for the cushions you love and pick a color for the walls from that. You will have to harmonize with the granite. Most people would say grey for the walls. sigh. in five years everyone will be repainting all that grey. Can you move the light fixture to center over the table and get something wonderful? Spend some real time and money adjusting the lighting. Go to a lighting store with these pictures and see what they suggest. That granite, which we can't see very well, will control your choices.

Are the cabinets in reasonably good condition? If not, then just paint. Understand that once the Backsplash goes on it is close to impossible to successfully lift the countertops off and replace the cabinetry.
I would suggest you establish a budget for the paint and tile, then go to a tile store and see what matches your budget. To keep costs under control, I recommend using a cost effective field tile with a 'deco' band of more expensive tiles such as glass. Paint to get rid of what ever that is on the wall, change the fridge to stainless and personally I would leave the backsplash you have or else rip it out and install glass subway tile stacked ,up to bottom of cabinets to go with your granite. Make sure the grout is the same color as tile. Take down valance over patio door, change out lighting to track for better light in kitchen with the least amount of cost. Don't hang stuff on side of cabinets and if you want a rug in front of sink find a funny one to get away from gramma's.

Your kitchen looks nice, maybe just lacking some color you can bring in from an adjoining room? One thing I would do is see if your fridge door and be switched to swing to the left instead of the right. This can be accomplished on many fridges with just a screwdriver. Look for the little buttons that hide the mounting holes. It will be so much easier to use.

LOL, Molly, that's what I call it, too! Don't quite understand why the OP'r and others (incl. yourself) talk about needing one when it's clearly shown in the pics.

Change the paint to a more modern color. Maybe a shade of grey. Then do not hang oven mits on the sides of the cabinets (gives it the grandma's kitchen look). Take down the valance on the slider. Get rid of the chair rail and beadboard on the bottom of the wall. I belive the hardware, light fixture, and table set look fine. I would not do a tile above the granite backsplash. The kitchen is not that big and it could get too busy.

These look like photos of the previous owners' choices. You can probably reverse the fridge door handles. Pick some art you like, take some colors from that for new paint. Put some art over the sink or a cut-to-fit mirror or just continue the backsplash up. Change the lighting. Politely suggest that the sellers might want to take their valence with them to their new place (and any other window coverings that you intend to replace immediately).
