Need to spruce up deck!

We have a large deck with two many chairs and pots. The picture will show an arbor which is gone. I would like it back as it provides some cover for the windows and character. I need advise on furniture and arrangement. Any ideas?

First, I'd group all the clay-colored pots together and all the blue/green pots together. There are too many different pot finishes so stick with just 2, maybe three. Vary the height of the plants in the pots. Put a tall (small tree) in the largest pot with small trailing plants at its base. Keep the plant and flower colors complementary. Put the tall grouping over to the far right to detract from your view of the fence/neighbor's house. Same with the furniture. It's a bit too spread out and that makes it look disjointed--put the two wicker chairs in a grouping together perhaps to the left of the back door consider a small dining table and chairs on the deck near the neighbors. You have a spectacular view!

Is that your view???? Spectacular!! Vancouver? Ok, really like your pergola on house, and your multi- leveled deck in grey. I would start by taking all the pots off the deck to help you visualize how much space is there and to create, if space allows two outdoor " rooms" I see a covered BBQ and so a round table with chairs/umbrella could be set up as your outdoor kitchen with a view to die for, over on the right side of your upper deck. The 2 wicker style chairs you have could go together with the small table between them on the left side.
Next, I can't tell with existing photo how much room, but you need to work on the outdoor living room area possibly with a deep seating love seat and table, in grey vinyl wicker with colorful cushions. You could put the love seat in the middle on the lower level where you have the fire pot and place the 2 big grey chairs you already have on each side facing each other. If you want all furniture pieces to match in color, then paint the 2 big grey chairs and buy a deep seating love seat that has a similar color to the 2 brown chairs you have on the upper level. The 2 big chairs that you may choose to paint could be a light green, or blue or red, depending on your love seat and cushion colors you may buy. Anyways that is how I see it.

You can check out the outdoor floor tiles like the Scala (Google Snap and Go tile) which are easy to piece additionally on the ground for a new look. ;) I saw another brand here, http://list.qoo10.sg/item/OUTDOOR-TIMBER-FLOOR-TILE-SINGAPORE-SELLER-100-AUTHENTIC-BEAUTIFUL/482453309 (not sure where this brand is from but they all work the same). Since you have white and black windows, fans, doors, gates, you need a light tan beige rather than an off white cream - off white will just look dirty next to the white. Something that goes warm neutral instead of yellow will work well. Tropical can mean lots of different things to different people - pick one accent color - a lagoon type green-blue-green with large leafy palms, and add a sail shade (triangle shaped) in the same tone to the upper deck.

Work with a landscape designer/architect. Likely, some sort of retained, back filled walls will be necessary to create an area large enough to place a table with chairs & umbrella. If you entertain multiple generations, keep your patio to a single level. I would suggest integrating planting areas within the patio area, to introduce color & eventually partial shade. Designing a pergola into this composition would be a nice addition to. Get the blessings of any governing/HOA body that you need approvals from, which your design professional of choice should be able to facilitate for you. Happy Houzzing!

Artificial turf! The green (they come in different colours, too, if you'd like to be psychedelic) adds a lively pop of colour to a blah space, and they're designed in easy-to-install tile-style units that have some built-in drainage for minimal maintenance. Absolut Outdoors and Green Turf can tell you more :) And I'd hang an outdoor art piece or a screen for air plants on that blank wall, too, to enliven your balcony.

You could also consider a deep seating love seat in a black vinyl wicker and leave the grey chairs as is. Put back only a few groupings of your favorite pots in similar colors as kim suggested, around your newly created outdoor living and dining room.

Thank you - the view is from our home on Whidbey Island out to Admiralty Inlet. Basically, why we bought our home. We plan on putting a bbq area to the right in the picture to cover the fence area and to create some sort of outdoor kitchen. I do like the idea of grouping things and would like to do a table and love seat. My plantings are difficult as the deer go right up on the deck! But will try to get some taller items and group the pots. Thank you!

It seems that the seating is to far apart. I attached a suggestion for the top deck near the house. Once seating is arranged then as said above stay with 1 or 2 colors of pots in varying sizes.

You could have planters built along the edge of the deck, which alternate open areas for planting with closed sections for seating. Gives space for the plants but reduces the clutter.
