What do you have in your third drawer down?

In the past, the third drawer in your kitchen used to be reserved for all those random kitchen utensils or tea towels that are too big to fit in the first and second drawers.

But newer kitchen designs may be changing this tradition.

What do you store in your third drawer down? (Post a photo if you are brave!)

Depending on your space and storage requirements, you can equip the third drawer with many accessories - here's a picture with an example we have in our showroom (in this case, storage for dishes and lids)

As my kitchen is all drawers - it is many and varied!. My tea towels are actually in the top drawer of one of my sets of drawers I think the 3rd drawer idea was from when kitchens had all cupboards and just one set of narrow drawers

Are you saying that cooking next to the chute would gross you out even if its covered? Andd to use it for its intended purpose? In the first picture, it looks like the stove is directly underneath the chute, but I can see in other pics that it is not. I think it is far enough away. If everything is bagged properly, it shouldn't be that bad. You will have to check on local code regarding having the stove next to the window. Code may make your decision for you. People usually just put shorter cabinets above that type of range hood. I would recommend doing so because you need all the storage you can get. The hood--being different from the bank of cabinets--will provide relief to the eye. With cabinets above, it'll still feel balanced. And, as for covering the chute, do you want to cover it and restrict access or do you still need to use it for its intended purpose and just want to camouflage it? To help the room feel pleasant, cheery, and light, I recommend using a glass tile. Even though it's applied to a wall, the translucency still shows and evokes a sense of the adjectives above. I think it would help keep things light. Consider a slightly higher toe-kick underneath the lower cabinets. It helps to create a lighter-footed feeling. You could also consider cabinets that have furniture style feet. for a more open feeling. Your kitchen seems like an ideal room to use modern, lacquered cabinets. I don't know if you like the super-modern look, but I think it could be nice. Maybe just for the uppers. Use a medium-to-light toned wood on the bottom. A limestone floor might be nice. Or you can do wood or laminate. You could go with dark or light. I think it's mostly about preference.

Your second photo brings me right to the stairwell scene in Hitchcock's "Vertigo," although I realize I'm looking up, not down. It's really rather wonderful. I'm just wondering, looking to the upper left in particular, if it's been recently checked out by a structural engineer. As for paint, I'll be interested to see what others say. For me, who doesn't do a lot of white, I think I actually would stay with a white here. A muddy green might be nice as well, but you'd need to incorporate a bit of lighting -- perhaps uplighting along the beams unseen from below, with something amazing hanging from that cool, crazy peak you have. I usually store it in the kitchen. I tend to imagine the germs the goes around the bathroom and I wouldn't want germs on any medications/first aid etc to be around that. Also, the bathroom has too much moisture to be keeping medications.

Luke, please keep some if the empty film canisters, they hold $17 in $1 coins, and are handy in the car's ash tray. I don't have enough $2 coins to advise of their value. Look at the storage container of everything you through out and just like the lady above with the nappy containers, often things are grossly over packaged and can be re-purposed.

I have placemats and my cheese knife and boxed things that I get out when I have guests but I have 4 drawers....so the last drawer I use for pot holders and oven mitts and these are traditional drawers. I think that things are changing as are the size and the location of the
drawers. I have a galley kitchen but quite large and on the other side of my kitchen I have 2 pot drawers... I have just designed a kitchen where there were 3 drawers first drawer was a half depth and the other 2 were full depth. This was under her hot plate so the first one I suggested to her to put all of her cooking utensils and then next a pot drawer and the bottom one for her cake trays and cooling racks etc... Drawers are getting used more and they are a lot bigger......take care..Robyn

Let's see, tea towels, washing cloths, some very colourful placemats a friend bought in some South American country for me, and of course don't go with anything in my apartment (though it is the thought). Also an expensive Danish tablerunner in a filigree design that has since been replicated by many a Chinese factory and so has not seen the light of day for several years now. Plus a State of Texas apron for all those times I'm cooking up a storm (not).

Third drawer- Hmmm let's see... Scissors, tea towels, screwdrivers, lucca bands, tape (sticky, masking, packing, electrical), funnels, diamond steel (knife sharpener), serviettes, shoelaces, tea lights and some other stuff too hard to explain. And it's not even a big drawer....

NOT TEA TOWELS...my mastiff took a likiing to opening the drawer and stealing the tea towels and stashing them in a hidy hole that only he knew of, then giving them back to me if ever I looked miserable sitting on the back step with a cup of tea.
Could not deprive him of his caring ways so he now has the 4th drawer full of rags for all purposes....including giving me a present.
Have a really big old kitchen hutch with 8 drawers.
Third drawer down is electrical and plumbing things...plumbing tape, electrical tape, scissors, wire strippers,....old fashioned double adaptors from when I had only 2 power points, power boards, extention cables, all sorts of adaptors and chargers, old electric jug cords with different plugs and heads, masking tape, packing tape, duct tape, leak proofing tape, spare tap washers and assorted tools for the above, candles, wicks for the kero hurricane lamps,...spare light bulbsand some things I do not know the names or the uses of, cup hooks, sticky rubber pads for under chair legs and behind picture frames so they don't mark the walls, jar opener, spare padlocks...a tin of old keys for???, various "just in case" mending things, super glue, other glues, small rolls of wire...you never know when you need a bit, rolls of jute twine, wooden skewers, a box with pet care products, 5 metre length of new cotton rope....all the bits and pieces for everything....its a big long drawer, not needed for anything else but full of stuff and useful bits and pieces for when one lives in an old house still getting there.

@ Scavolini Kitchen Living etc.... Oh my, that's super duper organised! It would be too confusing for me and I'd have to go and buy all those things that fit in those spaces from Scavolini lest those of another brand or Grandmas' classic hand.- me- downs did not fit in the appropriate slots. Must say though that some designer must have had a fantastic "Da Vinci style" vision onto the future where every homemaker would have the exact place for every single item of kitchenware to ever be invented. Do you have a drawer where there's a space for one of those moulini's....if that's the name...they are a large metal bowl shape on a handle with perforations in the bottom and a handle with a semi circle plate attached that is turned round and round and into which you out vegetables to mash up for soups? I never know where to put my Gandmas's moulini!

@ Scavolini thanks so much...its all absolutely tops but I don't live at that level unfortunately and really doubt that I would choose to should the wherewithall appear. I think a few timber partitions and awful plastic drawer inserts would be enough for me and my Neapolitan Mastiff helper Jupiter...he needs a drawer of "stuff" that he's allowed to steal and hide so he can give me a present when I'm a bit down...I cannot imagine what would be the expression on his big wrinkly countenance if faced with a Scavolini drawer...he'd be so confused and devastated! All really tops but not for us, I'd forget where to put things and Jupiter would not know how or what to steal!

Third drawer.... tape measure (I don't know why - it just has lived there), silicon baking matt, silicon moulds, ice-cube bags, cookie cutters, piping bags and nozzles, tooth picks, bamboo skewers, birthday candles, extra long matches and kitchen twine.

This ia a really old article. My third drawer now houses all those 'one off' bits and pieces that don't warrant a drawer for themselves and their ilk. Amazingly, when I need...that thinamejig or whatzit that would do the trick its always in the thrid drawer. tangled up with all the other 'third drawer' one offs. So - third drawer for whatever you need! Pretty good system really. Apologies to the professional cabinet makers who cater to the super organised...drawers with partitions. Honestly, if I absolutely had to live according to the norm.."a place for everything and everything in its place" I'd go a bit batty trying to remember what was supposed to occupy what partition and I think, the way my mind works, I'd feel quite frustrated. I don't have time to be super duper organised down to the colour coding, the things of square or round shape, the plastics and the chinas...and I certainly do not posess a china cabinet where to display all the expensive and heirloom dinnerware. that would never get used...can't see the sense. In fact, I only have six drawers in my kitchen and a nice large 100yr old built in linen and pantry cupboard down the length of the hallway that was built to house the basic kitchen utensils and also has room for any modrn appliances. My kitchen is small, functional, individual ane compact, My beautiful wrinkly assistance dog has his own drawer...and he diligently takes out and replaces his "stuff". My bits and pieces live in the third drawer and when all is put way there's a sense of ease in my kitchen.
