Botanic Gardens MRT Station
The landscape here is a celebration. It is inspired by the historical role & significance of the site. Between 1879 & 1924, this part of SBG was the Garden’s famed economical garden. A wide range of plants were grown & experimented with here. The key success of the research was with Brazilian rubber. The results of the experimentation with the growing & tapping of this crop was hugely successful. It was aggressively promoted to planters by SBG. This crop was hugely successful. It was the socio-economic landscape of the region. By 1917, SBG had distributed 7 million rubber seeds. By 1920 Malaya was producing 50% of the world’s rubber & Singapore was the rubber capital of the world.
The aesthetics & intentions of the landscape are based on simplicity, elegance & functionality. The plants used are all economic plants carefully selected to represent what was grown in the economic garden more than a Century ago. Only a small number of species are selected for use to achieve an impact of simplicity in aesthetics & form.
