Bungalow at Binjai Park
This unusual commission involved the re-purposing of a garage and servants' quarters within a pre-war single-storey bungalow into a bachelor's pad. The list of accommodation which required the addition of bedroom, bathroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, study and library may have been generic; but stylistically, the design sought the intersection between the history of the house and the personality of the owner, one who loves books and wine. Created was a nuanced cosmos: nostalgia vis-a-vis the black and white bungalow aesthetic and plantation furniture balanced with the use of travertine and teak to evoke the feel of a gentleman's study. It was a figurative study of memories and continuity. The bachelor's pad, entered via a small gate, was a very private sphere with a quiet and simple garden. Physically, tall garden walls protect this private cosmos.
This bolt-hole together with the rest of the bungalow has since gone under the wrecking wall to give way to a brand new house for a different owner.
