Brick patio and pergula
As an alternative to a wood burning fire pit, this is an elegant gas fed pit. I think we need gas running to it no matter whether we preserve the ability to burn wood or not.
IF we went with a fireplace on the western edge of deck in front of garage, this would be a good design.
Like brick pattern for pathways, as opposed to main brick deck area. Would they work together?

We like the size of this pergola. Six by six vertical beams, and what appears to be 2" X 12" cross beams on top. Like the carpentry detail at the ends. We are still strongly leaning toward a pergola that spans the entire upper brick deck in front of the garage. This gives us more privacy from our neighbors on the west,
Very nice perimeter planters. Could we do this along edge of garage? Ed is suggesting metal horse troughs... would they fit inside?
Nice example of what could be the "soft scape" planting along the eastern boundary of the back yard. Plants we would like to consider in this area include a Rosebud tree or Dogwood, possible, Crepe Myrtle, and plants such as flowering sage, lavender, etc.
Yet one more fire pit. Of more interest is the bench, which could incorporate brick and wood construction.
The one thing I like about this photo is the different elevation between the upper deck and the dining area below. i am concerned about the gradual gradient you are describing in transitioning between the two. I very much want both areas to be level in their own right, understanding some grade for drainage is required. think we should consider a single step transition, with a possible ramp about 36 inches in diameter to the side.
Like this central fire pit. We could do the base in clinker brick, and have a concrete top as shown here.
