Kitchen Tour: A Hamptons-Style Cookspace With #StorageGoals
This elegant and beautifully-detailed cooking space was inspired by the owners' travels abroad
“The owners had very specific requirements for the kitchen because the wife loves to cook and entertain. She already had in mind the different items that needed to be stored. They spent some time looking for someone who could execute the style they wanted and found us,” says Lane Zhang of Country Concept.
The couple wanted a classic Hamptons-style kitchen, with Shaker-style cabinetry and a specific colour palette. The project was a meticulous collaboration between the owners, who opted to renovate without an interior designer. They worked with Country Concept, who was in charge of the all the carpentry; and their contractor, who managed the wet works.

The highlight of this kitchen is the full-height custom storage that wraps around most of the wall space. The fridge and cooking appliances were built into the customised cabinetry.
The tiered shelf on the left – the one with books, photos and knick-knacks – is actually a door that leads to the service yard.

Since the owners are very particular about what goes into the space, the team had to ensure that the compartments were precisely measured to fit everything, from pantry supplies to baking trays to art materials. There is also a special section for the couple’s favourite wines.
Apart from the grey tile flooring that demarcates the wet kitchen from the rest of the wood-floored space, the area can also be enclosed through glass sliding doors. The transparent partition maintains a bright and airy atmosphere in the wet kitchen, while keeping cooking aromas at bay.
Characteristic of a Hamptons-style kitchen, white subway tiles and Caesarstone countertops bring a brightening contrast to the grey cabinetry. A large metal pendant lamp also adds mood to the space.

Rustic, travel-inspired decor from their wedding are displayed above the main entrance and add a personalised touch.
With the island in place, the owners can entertain with ease as it creates a visual connection to the living area.
“This home was very complex because of the sheer amount of detail, planning and coordination that was required between the different parties involved. But it worked out great!” says Zhang.

Who lives here: A couple in their 30s
Location: Bishan
Size of house: 1,163 square feet (108 square metres)
The main goal was to create a spacious area for cooking and prepping, as well as to accommodate a creative workspace. “They demolished a bathroom and replaced it with a statement-making island,” Zhang says. The result is an open-concept kitchen that flows from the dry area to the wet area.
The owners also wanted two specific grey tones spray-painted on the Shaker-style cabinetry in the dry and wet kitchens. “The areas were in slightly different shades of grey, but blend together seamlessly,” says Zhang. Spray painting the cabinetry also brought out the beauty of the woodgrain, which is another specification that the couple had.
