Bathrooms are sometimes small and almost gloomy so any easy makeover that improves the aesthetics and makes the space more comfortable is very welcomed. Sometimes, you may require more elaborate jobs like a fresh coat of paint, new tiles, better lighting or updated fixtures. And other times, changing the smaller elements – like a nice rug and new towels – meet the need. And then, there are those times when potted plants can make a wonderful difference.

Here is a round-up of greenery that will do the trick.
Cuckooland
1. Swiss-cheese plant (Monstera Deliciosa)
Originally from tropical South America, its waxy, glossy leaves come with cuts that make it a showy and popular choice. The leaves are hardy when cut so you can also place them in vases in other parts of the house.

Tip: Another monstera to consider is Monstera obliqua. The leaves have more evenly-spaced and elongated holes. It can also be grown in a hanging basket or a pot.

2. Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)
As this plant thrives in indirect sunlight and high humidity, the bathroom is indeed the perfect spot for it.

3. Bird’s Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus)
With its large attractive leaves, a pot of this epiphyte makes a stunning piece on the toilet floor, shelf or vanity counter.

Bonus: Both the Boston fern and the Bird’s nest fern are non-toxic to both cats and dogs.

4. Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum)
This plant is super easy to grow, preferring bright yet shaded areas. It can even grow under fluorescent light and thrives in just about any environment. In feng shui, the money plant is believed to be a bringer of good luck, so having one in your bathroom kills two birds in one go. Confused about feng shui? Here is an introduction from a designer’s perspective.

5. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii)
Effective in removing indoor pollutants that are bad for your health, the peace lily has glossy, dark green, lance-shaped leaves and elegant white flowers.

6. Orchids (Orchidaceae)
Orchids prefer a humid environment, making the bathroom the perfect partner. Do take note that stagnant air may cause fungal problems so it is best that you put it in a spot with good air circulation.

7. Snakeskin (Sansevieria trifasciata cultivar)
Also cheekily called ‘mother-in-law’s tongue,’ this plant requires little maintenance. Its thick, leathery green leaves with yellow spots are effective in removing indoor pollutants, and look great in modern bathrooms.

8. Aloe (Aloe vera)
An incredibly useful plant to have around, gel from its leaves can be used as a topical treatment for minor burns, cuts, insect bites, and dry skin. Put it next to the window as it apparently creates a protective barrier against bad energy.

9. Cast-Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior)
This shade-loving evergreen shrub is one of the hardier kinds: it can tolerate poor light conditions, neglect, over-watering, and sometimes, extreme temperatures. However, for best results, let the soil dry in between waterings.
