Room Tour: A Chic Open-Plan Living-Dining-Kitchen-Bar
This open-concept design exemplifies the compact yet free-flowing space of condo living
For a house-proud couple who enjoy entertaining yet have to make do with a small floor area, the open plan seems like a challenging solution – where do you put all the functional, unattractive stuff when guests come over?
Kerhow Wong, architect and principal designer of asolidplan, says that the design brief was “to create larger spaces from the existing small apartment, without compromising on the functional needs of a laundry yard, a kitchen, a dining table and a bar.” In this open-plan living-dining-kitchen-bar area, the fridge, washing machine, cooker hood, full whisky bar, wine fridge and water dispenser are all concealed.

Induction hobs are built flat into the quartz-topped table, and the cooker hood rises from it with the push of a button.
The washing machine is concealed under the small L-shaped kitchen counter.
The owners, who entertain most often during football season, says Wong, also required a full bar.

Wong designed the bar, with full-height wine fridge, to be built into the dining area cabinets, which are clad in EDL Laminates.
“The key thing about the main space is that everything is there but out of sight,” Wong says. “Our client shared our interest in the creation of open and big spaces, without compromising on the basic living requirement. We hid almost every appliance and equipment in clean-lined storage, while achieving bigger spaces.”
He adds: “This is our first attempt at trying to create a super compact living space, with simple volumes, lines and planes, overlapping from one space to another.” And what a solid first attempt, from the looks of it.

In order to achieve this open-plan design, Wong and his team knocked down the existing kitchen walls, creating a free-flowing, multi-functional yet neatly zoned space in the 102-square-metre (1,100 square feet) condominium. They then built “a long communal table that is a working desk, an island kitchen top, a bar counter, a dining table and a Texas HoldEm play table” all in one sleek block.
