Room Tour: Open-Plan Living-Dining Room Goes Hollywood Glam
A family's penthouse is a suitable stage for its fashionable owners, their kids and a pet
With the client being a fashion designer, it was only logical to design a home indicative of her glamorous personality, says Design Intervention‘s founder, Nikki Hunt. “Seriously this home reflects the personal style of the client, her loves and her style,” Hunt says. Together with design director Hee Soo Kang, Hunt crafted exactly that, including bespoke furniture – as the open-plan living and dining room showcases to great effect.
“Hide as floor rugs are eminently practical. As a skin, hide can be washed and scrubbed easily and is therefore far more practical than wool or other silk rugs. As hide has a very short pile compared to most other rugs, food debris doesn’t get stuck within the pile as can be the case with deeper pile rugs”, Hunt says, explaining how the glamorous design is kid-friendly.
A free-form zebra-stencilled cowhide is used to add pattern to the living room. “The zebra design, is a high-glam accent wherever it is used,” Hunt says.

“Black and white and lashes of animal print are obvious choices for a glamorous woman,” Hunt says. The pink – Pantone’s Colour of 2016, Rose Quartz – softens the contrasting colours, and reflects the soft femininity of the client. A loose seat cover (not pictured) was custom-made to match and protect the velvety upholstery and icy hue of the pink sofa for daily use. The ottoman that doubles as a coffee table is covered in animal print that can camouflage potential stains.
“The sheepskin chair, well, that does seem a bit of an indulgence… but again as a natural fur, it can be washed and scrubbed and then blow-dried with a hair dryer so perhaps not as ridiculous as it appears and it does look divine, doesn’t it?” Hunt adds.

To add an extra dimension to the dining area’s design, Hunt used a rug made up of two different shades of grey cowhide, stitched together, patchwork-style to form the geometric design.
Rich teal velvet covers the backs of the dining chairs, adding a rich but vibrant warmth to the room. “But velvet is not the most forgiving choice for dining chairs. Food particles can get stuck between the pile, making it difficult to clean and stains can be hard to remove. So we confined the plain velvet to the back of the chair which gets far less wear, and on the seat front and back, we used a fabric with a shaded pattern that would mask stains,” says Hunt.
The vibrancy of the blues adds a sense of fun that shows the client’s fun-loving side and and makes the design feel less serious and more suitable for a family.

One of the requirements for this chic, glamorous home was that it be kid- and dog-friendly, too. The client – whom Hunt describes as “a lover of colour and texture, and wanted a home that reflects her love of colour and fashion” – and her husband have two young children, a dog, and two nannies. So albeit fashionable, the home also has to be practical. The client, Hunt adds, enjoys entertaining too.
