Room Tour: A Living Area Shows Love for Mickey Mouse
Who says the beloved character is only for kids' rooms? This stylish space begs to differ
The brief was clear and straightforward: “The couple wanted a Mickey Mouse-themed space,” says Kate Deng, co-founder of Mr Shopper Studio. This condo flat’s owners are self-confessed Mickey Mouse lovers. “They initially preferred bright colours, but we felt it would make the area look a little too childish.”
Deng and co-designers Ken Lee and Ben Teo set out to create a space that has the Disney character element that the owners wanted, but exudes a classy, grown-up look that they won’t tire of, and befits the new chapter in their lives as a married couple.

The team had to do precise measurements to achieve the iconic silhouette that looks well-proportioned. “We had to balance the character’s ratio with the TV dimension, as well as the limitations of the existing wall length,” she says. Using cut-out black laminate and LED strip lighting, the Mickey Mouse figure makes a dramatic statement on the feature wall.
The rustic woodgrain on the feature wall and ceiling cladding also draw attention in the minimally-furnished living area. The wood element forms a canopy that runs across the space.

A bar counter was also built behind the sofa to enhance the chill out vibe. “The owners like to watch TV while chilling out, but they hardly have the time to cook and dine at home (thus the absence of a dining area). If they really need a proper sit-down dinner, they dine in their balcony,” says Deng.
An array of caged pendants complete the industrial look, while a full-length mirror visually doubles the space.

Glass sliding doors provide a refreshing view of the outdoors and fill the living area with natural daylight. With a cosy sofa and soft cushions to boot, this is indeed the ideal spot for the owners to kick back and relax – with their much-loved mouse – after a long, hard day.

To incorporate the Mickey Mouse theme, the designers took inspiration from the Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Cafe in Changi Airport. “They made use of the character’s silhouette to create their display cabinets,” says Deng. They decided to employ the same technique in this space, while using the industrial style as the key design theme.
