Room Tour: This Dining Room's Centrepiece was Inspired by Toys
Fun-with-function is the name of the game for this small space, with its custom-designed display and storage feature
For an apartment that’s just over 60 square metres (660 square feet), storage was a main concern of the owners. They had a collection of Transformers that they wanted to display without cluttering up their space-starved home. Designer Biyi Oh and her team at Proj. B Studio came up with a display cabinet that also functions as shoe storage, seating and divider. Leading from the foyer into the dining area, it’s become the centrepiece and main attraction of the open layout.
With its sculptural form, the cabinet has become the main feature of the apartment – although it’s best viewed from the dining area.
“We took the average size of the toys into consideration to make sure that they are able to fit within the display cases,” Oh says. A signed Liverpool football takes pride of place in the top display case.
The rest of the cubes were designed for general storage to keep the 10-square-metre (250 square feet) dining room in order.

Some of the storage cubes are enclosed by doors in various Tetris tile configurations, while other cubes are drawers.
A block of four cubes makes up a storage seat towards the foyer. “The seat is for the owners to sit and put their shoes on before they head out,” Oh says.

Upholstered stools complete the seating for the simple dining room. Oh says: “As the space within the dining area is limited, stools were more appropriate instead of chairs. Proportionately, they look better too.”

The L-shaped cabinet divides the apartment’s open layout between living room and dining room. Made of 50 ‘cubes’, each measuring 250mm by 250mm (with depths varying according to function), it has glass boxes, drawers and a small bench arranged in Tetris-inspired stacks. The dining bench is made of the same wood finish, while the dining table’s glossy white is echoed by the white portions of the cabinet.
