Room Tour: This Hero Living Room Packs in a Bang and a Kerpow
This shared living-dining area takes on urban wall art with a grownup approach
As with most superhero-themed spaces, it’s easy to go overboard with loud colours and excessive details. Associate Director Leon Luo from Free Space Intent understands this all too well, and for this shared living and dining space, he trod between the line of tacky and tasteful very carefully. The result is the perfect balance of eclectic street and pop art accents set against a modern white backdrop.
Crayon-bright pop of yellow outlines the curved design details of the TV feature wall and ceiling. The fun motif faces a mural of black-and-white doodle art.
“We wanted to capture the excitement of our favourite superheroes battling infamous villains such as Godzilla, “ says Luo of the action-packed scene. “We had three local mural artists come in to complete this large cityscape scene.”
Illustrated by hand, the mural also features the owners’ beloved pet husky as part of the superhero ensemble. With the mural spanning the entire living room wall, the space is visually widen into the balcony.
“Since their husky is no longer with them, the homeowners wanted to pay tribute to their pet by having a graffiti mural in the likes of it, “ says Luo. Slac Satu, a well-known graffiti and mural artist, was commissioned and the homeowners were impressed by how lifelike their pet is depicted in graffiti art form.
Pop art accents in the form of the graffiti wall art’s bright colours inject cheer and energy to the dining space. It overlooks the homeowners’ extensive collection of Funko figurines which are neatly housed.
For it to flush seamlessly with the wall, the setup of the Funko showcase called for some clever configuration. Luo integrated the entire showcase alongside the DB box, which is now hidden behind a blackboard-painted covering. By turning this unsightly power control box into part of a functional showcase cabinet, it shows how design ingenuity can go a long way.

“The homeowners share a common interest in pop culture,” reveals Luo. “They wanted something to reflect their mutual interest and a display space to showcase their Funko figurines.” To allow their favourite things to take centre stage, he conceptualised a whitewashed space with organic curves along the ceiling and walls. Several mural artists were hired to give this home its unique stamp of individuality.
