Keeping candles in the small high shelf in the fridge works.....the candles do not melt in the Qld. Heat and one can always find them in the dark. The matches need to be somewhere close by!

Oh my goodness, I have been doing this for years! Our top drawer in the kitchen in a cupboard has batteries, recharger for long life batteries, a multi meter, and various other things related to that. I have a box for bulbs, one for candles in an emergency, with matches in another, I have bandaids of various sizes with other things like manuka honey to dab on a wound (works exceptionally well!) and cotton tips in a drawer system. I am in the midst right now of drilling holes in a piece of craft wood double thickness to store my screwdrivers. I was going bananas sorting through them in a box! I do keep one or two flat blade and philips head with a couple of small pliers in the kitchen for those fiddly jobs, but the others will go on a shelf in my garage. I HATE spending time scratching around looking for something urgently, so my idea is container, label, and store where you use it most. Great article.
