The tour itinerary for Architours, one of the most popular signature events of Archifest 2018, is here! Hosted by Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA), the presenter/organiser of the annual festival, Architours is curated by The Architecture Society (TAS) of the National University of Singapore. This year, with the overarching theme ‘Design for Life’, the tours are designed with the sub-themes ‘Design for People’, ‘Design for Time’ and ‘Design for Environment’ featuring institutional, social, hospitality, commercial and residential projects. Through Architours, visitors can see each project through the eyes and narrative of its architect/s.

Date: Sat & Sun; 29 and 30 Sep, 6 and 7 Oct
Time: Morning tours at 9 am to 2.30 pm; Evening tours at 1 pm to 6.30 pm
Venue: Various locations. Meeting point at Singapore Institute of Architects, 79 Neil Road
Fee: $50 for adults, $42 for students via Peatix.

If you’ve always been curious to see more of that particular house you’ve been passing daily, or how it feels inside a building you’ve only read about, now is the time to buy your ticket. Places are limited for each session, and the tours that include residential projects are often booked early!

Tour 1
Tour 1 features projects representing all the sub-themes – People, Time and Environment – with a restored place of religion, a new campus, and the award-winning Warehouse Hotel by Zarch Collaboratives (above).

Tour 2
This tour focuses more on the sub-theme ‘Design for People’. The featured projects demonstrate how architecture shapes the lives of those in and around. These include a private residence, an adapted Art Deco building, and a very special school, the Rainbow Centre School by Plystudio Architects (above), as an exploration of human relations.

Tour 3
Tour 3 features projects above a certain size, following the themes of “Design for People” and “Design for Environment” each in very different ways. These include Ascott Orchard and Cairnhill 9 by RSP Architects Planners & Engineers.

Tour 4
This tour includes projects that have been designed for more than one of the three sub-themes, Design for People, Time and Environment, blending tradition and culture, history and modernity and highly complex requirements. It includes the Sengkang Hospital (left) by DP Architects.

Tour 5
Tour 5 speaks to the sub-theme ‘Design for People’. The featured projects showcase very different ways in which the considerations of the user drive the articulation of space. For the very young, the very old, and everyone else in-between, these projects include a multi-generation home by Aamer Architects (left), a preschool, and a home for the elderly.

Tour 6
Tour 6 addresses both sub-themes Time and Environment, with the added point of interest being what some say is Singapore’s specialty high rise residences, adaptive reuse of conservation, and the Stark House by Park + Associates, which opens directly to the tropics (left).

Tour 7
Tour 7 features the sub-theme ‘Design for Time’, with projects showing different ways in which architects tread this line: a modern place of worship, a colonial monument, Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall rejuvenated by W Architects (above), and a humble home.

Tour 8
Time is also the focus of the projects featured in Tour 8; conserved Singapore landmarks, in particular. This tour features projects such as the Dakota Crescent SIT flats (above) as part of the conservation dialogue.
