An airy and light feeling inhabits this kitchen from the white walls to the white cabinets to the bamboo countertop and to the contemporary glass pendant lighting. Glass subway tile serves as the backsplash with an accent of organic leaf shaped glass tile over the cooktop. The island is a two part system that has one stationary piece closes to the window shown here and a movable piece running parallel to the dining room on the left. The movable piece may be moved around for different uses or a breakfast table can take its place instead. LED lighting is placed under the cabinets at the toe kick for a night light effect. This Old House, Bedford. I was asked to be back on the team to work on the second oldest house TOH had ever worked on! It was a great project, super homeowners and a fair amount of discovery and challenges as we brought this old house back to her former glory. The homeowner needed more space and wanted to add on a great room of the kitchen. I was tasked with creating a kitchen that fit into todays modern world but celebrated the "old house" details. Exposed beams, uneven floors, posts and storage needs where all high on the to do and worry list! Working in a full size pantry with counters and a deep freeze provided that function and charm we were all hoping for in this new kitchen. A custom blue inset island with a beautiful 2" thick honed Danby marble top works nicely in the open concept feel. Glass fronted cabinets, blue and white tile and a hint of red in the back wall of the pantry all have a nod to the historic roots of the property and subtle reminder to it's part in the American Revolution. How Do I Plan My Kitchen Renovation?

Singaporeans love food, eating and cooking. That makes kitchens an important part of their homes. With limited space available in HDB apartments and condominiums, your kitchen design needs to be a blend of form and function.

1. Lifestyle: Choose a Kitchen Layout That Works For You

If you’re renovating your kitchen or designing a new one from scratch, the first question to ask is "what layout do I want?" Your layout determines the way you cook, entertain. For example, do you want a kitchen island to socialise and entertain friends and family? Or would you like easy access between the stove, sink and refrigerator?

2. Functionality: Understand the Basic Functions of Your Kitchen Design

Storage, preparation and cooking are the three main functions in a Singaporean kitchen, and you should plan according to these three factors. Most homes have either an L-shaped, U-shaped or galley kitchen. Thoughtful space planning around these three factors ensures that you work smoothly around the kitchen. Together, the three factors make up the kitchen work triangle.

3. Design: Which Style, Colours and Materials For Your Kitchen?

In general, use one colour for vertical surfaces (kitchen cabinets), and another for horizontals (kitchen counters). Save vivid colours for the backsplash, which can be easily changed. Your choice of colour for surfaces will also direct your selection of finishes for the kitchen countertop material, taps, hood and sinks. For example, a Scandinavian style wood-themed kitchen can contrast with black taps and geometric backsplash tiles. Lighting is often called the jewellery of kitchen design - getting this right will impress friends and family. Pendant lights should be used on a kitchen island to create atmosphere. Soft lighting can bring out the textures of the kitchen cabinet's design and pattern of backsplash tile finishes.
