Home Office Redo help!

I'm getting ready to redo my home office and would appreciate any idea, tips or inspiration.
The goal is clean, comfortable, and a bit of modern touch. This is right off our front entrance and we have dual glass doors to the office so everyone can see into the room. I plan on getting rid of all furniture you see and building a desk that would face the dual doors and have it in the middle of the room (a little toward the back corner) with a dark/black rug under it. In the short term I can use the black desk you see and run under it, until I have build a new one. The one I build will be similar in shape, but a distressed & stained wood. Unsure of the leg type yet.
I plan on keeping the wainscot white and would like some tone of grey above it. Light fixture can be replaced, hopefully with something that has a fan for the hot Arizona summers, yet provide good light and great appeal. The windows need curtains, not sure color or style and I wouldn't object to replacing the blinds. I'd like to keep the square family pictures.

9 years agoHere are a couple more. I saw a very similar layout with dual glass doors, similar window lay out and had grey walls, but I've searched for days now to find that photo and can't. It had the desk in middle and curtains up and is the source of my ideas with the room. I'll keep hunting for it.

Comments (6)First thing you need to understand is the scope of the project and what your abilities and experience will cover. Do you have any experience managing a construction project? Have you ever scheduled a construction project? Have you drawn up a trades (i.e. framing, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, etc., etc..) contract? Have you ever dealt with the permitting office in pulling permits? Have you ever inspected any construction for quality and compliance to the design documents? Have you ever dealt with inspections or construction deficiencies and had to resolve them with the sub-contractors? If you can't answer yes to all these questions, then you're venturing into a field you know little or nothing about. Any mistakes or stumbles you make in your learning curve are most likely going to be costly in both time and your budget. There are some projects that are DIY level.......there are some that would best be left to those of us already having the background and experience. Let me give you an example. I have an oak tree beside the house I'm renovating. It sits about 12' from the end of the house and has at least a 30' radius drip line which means it extends out over the roof of the house. Having spent a number of years of my young life on a ranch and farm, I know how to drop trees. I know how to operate a chain saw safely without loosing a limb or making a quick trip to the ER. From years in the construction / design field, I know how to operate a high lift ......... but even I know that the task of removing this tree is beyond my level in spite of my willingness and wish to save the $3500 I've been quoted. There are some things best left to the pros. Besides, If I drop a 14" diameter limb on the roof, I would never hear the end of it from my wife. Based solely on the questions you asked, I would highly recommend that you hire an Architect to help you with the design and your budget. Comments (2)Hi 4eva zx, If you're only occasionally using the guest/study room as a place for a guest to sleep, then you should prioritise being able to use it as your home office. That said, you'd be better off having a more comfortable and convenient desk, rather than one where you'd have to climb up and down a platform, and possibly roll off it if you're using an ergonomic chair. A short-term guest would be well-served by a single-sized sofa bed, which you can also enjoy as a reading lounge when there is no guest. The broken lines indicate the sofa bed when unfolded – not ideal as it would block access to the wardrobe, but it shouldn't be an issue for occasional use. The best use of this room would be for you to enjoy it as much as possible. You could even install some overhead bookshelves in the corner above where you planned to put the desktop. Comments (5)Hello, In 3 years time, you need to put back the wall since u have a 9 yrs old Son hitting teenager and expect own space or your girl would prefer her private space as girl and part of build self-respected lady. Beginning putting them together helps build bond and family strength. Best to start building independence early, makes your parenting easier. Build a home rather than a house. A space is meant to build relationship. With your family size, I would not suggest breaking wall. Extend living room, best is extending into balcony by creating same levels as living room. Now got zip blinds which seal aircon space within balcony open to living. Having glass showcase is good for your toys display. See idea from Ikea. For your new home starting, get basic done prosper. Basic means the essentials. For other parts, take your time and enjoy finding more ideas and shopping around till the great feeling comes to u. If not sure, I think Ikea has many combinations so if u do not like after few years, easy to do make-over. Expensive furniture is too painful to change. Ha! More space for bedroom? use the folding type beds and double as study table. I use platform bed like Japanese room. For Long dining tables, there are extendable type when guests comes. I suppose i could have an alternative scheme where the TV is at the bookshelf wall and on the opposite wall to fit a right angle 3+2 seater sofa facing the TV instead. Can i fit in a 1.2m round dining table in that dining space ? There will be custom made fittings e.g. shoe cabinet, tv console, work desk, book/display shelf. May i also check with you on your fees if i do intend to have a fuller drawing plan of the layout and the fittings ? Thank you....See More

9 years agoI've been hooked on those industrial book shelves since I saw the first one. What about incorporating something like one of these? Would it clash against a grey wall or go well? Which wall would you choose assuming the desk is floated toward center of room facing the door and a small chase lounge & smaller side table are on the same wall as the double glass doors (facing the computer desk).
Would you recommend white roman shades to match baseboard/trim?

9 years agoI built an industrial style lamb that would fit those perfectly, just not sure how they would look with everything else in the room. I've been trying to find a good place for it.

9 years agoHave you considered changing the doors into the office to not only create a little more privacy but also give the entrance to the office and the hallway a unique wow factor? Based on what I see, something similar to the photos below would look really cool.

9 years agoMike, you're lucky to have lots of room to work with. Be sure to angle your desk so you don't get glare on - or behind - your computer screen. Also consider your traffic flow so you don't need to go way around a desk to leave the room. You may want to consider wrapping your desk so you have all your work within easy reach. (I know you're planning on building your own desk, so that depends on how complicated you want it.) Also, decide on open book cases or closed storage....maybe some of both.
