Cold tiles or floorboards, yet easy to clean, or warm and comforting carpet that can get mess and dirt in it?

I love carpet in dining rooms (and restaurants) as it is a wonderful way to add a feeling of warmth and fabulous at absorbing noise—the whole dining experience is more relaxed and ambient with a soft floor covering. If you are worried about mess and dirt, large rugs can do the same thing and may be easier to manage (and soda water added quickly to stains works like magic!).

I'd allow it in the living room or dining room but never in the bathroom.

I would reupholster the rosewood furniture in natural canvas or a natural linen look . Ask the upholsterer to do the job with NO welting. That will make it look more contemporary. Then stop by West Elm, Pottery Barn, or Crate & Barrel for some brightly colored pillows. I'm thinking coral might work well with your tile, but you be the judge of what color works best with it. For now we'll assume it's coral. So I'd like to see one wall painted coral if you're so inclined. Otherwise, I'd leave the walls white. Next, let's cover some of that tile you don't like. Two choice: 1. A rug you'll take with you. Perhaps a shaggy offwhite one. 2. A rug you'll leave in your rental. This could be a large piece of carpeting, cut and bound like a rug. Measure for size before going to the carpet store. Most carpeting is 12' wide, so figure on making a rug 12 x something so that there is no waste, or you could make a couple of 6 x somethings. If you could change out the rosewood coffee table for another, I think you'd be happier with the furniture. It needs some variety. Even a couple of small tables from IKEA could work for 6 to 8 months.

You already have your accent colour as your sofa pillows (log roll pillows). I would take one of them shopping with me to get a rug that has that colour in it. It doesn't need to be a lot of that colour (I love the idea of burgandy rug here...but it might be too much with your monotone scheme). You can find a large rug that incorporates that red/raspberry in it so that you have a colour that is now your accent.

I like the industrial feel of the art, Poonam. I've put together a mood board, concentrating on the grungy industrial colours. I think you probably have room for a small sectional, and a few bar stools at the kitchen counter -- probably no more seating than that. I love this round coffee table, and the fact that the 'distressed' rug really does look as though it might have been in a workshop somewhere. :-) I imagine you might be mounting a TV on the left wall as you enter? Nowhere else to put one, really. If you could get a really shallow TV cabinet to put it on that would be good as it could give you a bit of storage in the room. Which may be small, by the way, but it's fabulous. Congratulations.

I'd not previously experienced carpet in a dining area until my parents built their house.

It's probably okay in an adults only environment. Just add children to create squashed food thoroughly rubbed in, beetroot and similar stains, and/or marks that no-one knows how they arrived and science hasn't worked out how to get rid of them.

They have what started out as bland beige carpet, now it's multicoloured and "interesting" (for want of a better term).

I had carpet underneath the dining table - never ever again! Sooo unhygienic! And since I am allergic to dustmites - no carpet for me ever again, anywhere.

We have always had carpet in the dining room, including when we rented. We used a dropsheet under the highchair. I never really thought about it until we bought a new dining suite and the heavier chairs leave lines in the carpet. Never anticipated that.
