Where is the best place to put a niche in the shower

I have decided I want to put a couple of niches in my shower in a house we are having built but am wondering where is the best placement of them so that they don't have so much water spraying on them?

It depends. What's the size of your shower, and where's the showerhead located?

In addition to water spray, consider that if you're in a heating climate you might not want it on an exterior wall if it will result in you losing the majority of your insulating value in that section of wall.

You can check out the outdoor floor tiles like the Scala (Google Snap and Go tile) which are easy to piece additionally on the ground for a new look. ;) I saw another brand here, http://list.qoo10.sg/item/OUTDOOR-TIMBER-FLOOR-TILE-SINGAPORE-SELLER-100-AUTHENTIC-BEAUTIFUL/482453309 (not sure where this brand is from but they all work the same). They even have faux grass, stones as well as timber. Definitely easy to DIY, and you can combine different surfaces together if you want (stones and wood combo for example).

A dishwasher is usually near the sink because it needs plumbing. I'd assume your placement will be near the sink for the same reason. They usually have doors that open down. If it is in a corner, it will block the opening of cabinets next to it. It will also create a mass that makes it harder to reach cabinets above it. It will probably generate some heat, so you don't want it next to your fridge. When it is opened after finishing a cycle, heat and steam will come out, so given the option, you might not want it below cabinets where dry goods are stored, although this hasn't been an issue for me, but I live in a house where I run a humidifier for half of the year.

Hi Fred, Thanks for the want of the precise measurements. The U shape area in my kitchen is 64" - 104 - 99" (left - centre - right). Height of the kitchen area is 107". The wall with the fridge has total length of 99" Fridge is 32" wide, 29" deep, 73" high (I bought this fridge on a good bargain but realized it was slightly oversized in this kitchen area, but got to live with it now) The wall beside the fridge is 23" deep I know some gap has to be left between this wall, the fridge and the wall mounted/countertop cabinets for ventilation I guess. So I'd say the cabinets on this wall will have a length of only 63"/64"? The microwave is 18.5 wide, 13" deep, 10.5" high The oven is 24" wide, 24" deep, 24" high. The wall next to the fridge which will have this feature cabinet 42" wide, 110" high which is next to the main door. I'm thinking the feature wall is kind of plain, but it covers up where the fridge is sticking out.

Hi Dagobert Duck (interesting name), I am assuming that this is a townhouse in Asia, as you mention the dry kitchen and wet kitchen (terms used mostly in Singapore) and also from the visible lift on the plan that you shared. I would definitly advice you to keep the dry kitchen and place the dining table close to the dry kitchen or close to the bay window on the left. The space here is rather large and can easily accommodate a regular 2 metre table with 8 chairs. If you are concerned about the view of dining table as you enter the house, you could always place a round table near the entrance to block off the view. I agree with Elaine about placing the furniture away from walls. Place a bunch of fresh flowers or art/sculpture above the round table like in a hotel entrance. So the the first view you see when you enter the house is the table with flowers. Its difficult to give you any further advice as we have no idea what your final vision of the place is? While not exactly part of your question, possibly another thing to consider in the niche placement is whether they're something you want to see from your bathroom or not. While the niches themselves can be beautiful, the various bottles that go in them (covering up the gorgeous tile work) are not. We have a half wall of tile dividing the shower and rest of the bath and chose to put the niche there. It's totally out of the spray for one shower head and while it's directly in line with the other shower head it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Your niche can be a beautiful design element and functional too. To avoid the bottle clutter issue, buy decorative containers for your soap and shampoo and transfer the contents. There are places online to order them (bottles)from if you cannot find what you like locally. For design ideas for the niche, visit your tile shop or browse the gallery here for ideas.

Great idea about the different bottles, ladycfp! I've been wondering about putting the niche on the most visible wall, but that will help a lot.

If you face the shower head when you are bathing, wouldn't you want the niche on the wall with the shower head? My vote is to think practical.

I'm putting mine on the back wall (the wall opposite the showerhead). That way I don't have to step completely into the water flow and have water in my face while reaching for whatever I want.

That WOULD be the best place for it. The problem is that the wet wall usually has all the rough plumbing inside it, and unless you want to send your plumber's kids to Yale, it's tough to reroute all the piping.

The place for it is usually the wall adjoining the wet wall, about a foot or so away from the corner.
